Reagan’s POV
As we approached the Shadow Pack. I could hear Sam grinding her teeth. “I think I’m going to throw up,” she whispered.
“You’re not here alone, Sam,” Phillip said reassuringly.
“Just keep thinking about why you’re here,” I said as I looked at the gates as we approached them. As Phillip brought the car to a halt, he rolled down the window. A young guard approached, while some older men stood to hiş flank.
“We’re here on behalf of the Alpha King. “Your Beta, or head warrior, needs to guide us to your Alpha,” Phillip stated firmly. The boy looked at me before his eyes glazed over.
“Someone is on their way,” he told us. Phillip rolled up his window as we waited. I looked at Sam, who had her eyes closed and was breathing hard. Given the circumstances, she was doing so well. Phillip rolled the car forward, so we were just inside the pack.
A sob from the back seat made me look at Sam. I can’t take this anymore. It is too much for her. We needed to Leave. I would return with Phillip after we took Sam to South View. “The last time I was here on this spot,” she took a huge gulp and stuttered out a word. “Garth…” She didn’t need to finish her sentence. I put it together. Thiswas the place where Garth was killed.
“He did his duty, and he died honorably,” I told her.
“He died because of me. If he hadn’t found me, he would still be alive.”
“If he hadn’t found you. You would be dead. It was you or him, and Garth chose to save you.” I reminded her. Phillip looked confused, but didn’t ask any questions.
“There, here,” Phillip told us after a minute of silence. I looked to my left to see. A group of men appeared. One of them was middle-aged and larger than the other. That must be Xavier, as I knew the Beta was younger. Phillip and I got out of the car and exchanged words with him. He insisted we show him the Alpha King’s invitation before allowing us into the pack. Afterward, he insisted that he ride with us as our safety was his priority. I could see what Sam meant about him being by the book.
I was anxious at first, knowing Sam was in the car. But the way Sam spoke about Xavier, I suspected she would be safe in his vicinity. I rushed to get in the car before he did.
I watched him in the mirror as he climbed inside, closing the door behind him. Then I watched his expression as he realized who was sitting beside him.
“What the goddess are you doing here?” he asked Sam.
“You know what I’m like, and I nearly confessed several times. But-still maintain it was the right thing to do.” He told her, and I believe he was being truthful.
As the car stopped outside a targe packhouse, we all got out. Sam carried the invitation in one hand and held on to me with the other. As we approached the packhouse, the double doors were thrown open, and a few women rushed out. They were followed by a woman wearing a bright pink dress, which revealed a lot of flesh. Sam froze. “Lily,” she spoke.
“Luna. These people are here on behalf of the Alpha King,” Xavier spoke loudly. I growled, putting the face to the name. That was just before a scent hit my nose, just before Callan spoke the singular word I had always hoped to hear. “Mate,” I growled again, trying to figure out which one of the women was my mate. As Lily got closer, Callan confirmed it was her.
Of all the she-wolves in the world. Why is my fated mate a womanJ am destined to hate? There is no chance Callan will let me kill her now. I guess I’ll just have to kill the Alpha and deal with her later.
Damn it, goddess, what are you playing at?
