Alpha’s Betrayal Luna’s Revenge (Samantha) novel Chapter 63

Ellie’s POV

When I met Richard last time, he was pleasant and respectful. Considering l am not that sociable, we got along. He felt comfortable enough to talk to me about his investigation. But in my mind, there were a lot of unanswered questions that he hadn’t even thought about.

So l asked them. I didn’t expect to hear from him again, as | believed he had gotten everything he needed. That was until I got a call from Sam asking me to contact him.

Could you show me exactly where you found Reagan?

Something isn’t adding up in my investigation,” he said.

It would mean going back to the woods where we found him. But it would allow me to settle things with Edgar and collect any of Sam’s belongings, now that I know she is not going back there. Given that the ceremony was organized for 11 pm. It would make it a long day driving for me. But I could achieve so much. My only concern would be that Bessie was not used to driving that far. But I did it once a month when I visited Sam, so it should be fine, I told myself.

So that morning, I left at a stupid time and drove non-stop to the human town to see Edgar. He was sad that Sam wouldn’t be returning as she was a pleasant tenant and helped in the diner when needed.

After helping me load her belongings into my truck, we shook hands and agreed that his family’s debt had been repaid. I never wanted it repaid, it was the right thing to do. I’m not frivolous or greedy. I didn’t need the money.

But I would be damned if I saw a good woman lose everything because of something out of her control.

It was 10 am when I made it to the woods. Richard was already there waiting for me, looking at a map. “I brought a picnic. So we could talk after you have shown me where you found Reagan,” he told me as he flipped the lid on a basket of food. It was full to the brim of food.

As I showed Richard the exact spot, we found Reagan. I couldn’t help but notice there were a lot of new bushes there, bushes that didn’t fit in, causing them to die from lack of sunlight. “Are you sure this is the place?” Richard asked me as I scanned the area again.

“Definitely, but it’s changed,” | told him as I leaned down, touching the soil. “Look, the ground is soft, and I bet.” | pulled one of the bushes up easily. “The roots haven’t had a chance to set yet. It isn’t the right bush for this area.

These haven’t been here that long.” I told him. My adopted mom used to plant as a form of therapy, and she would talk to me a lot about it. I know far too much about something I am not interested in.

“Huh,” Richard said as he walked away.

After he laid a blanket on the grass, we ate, and he pulled out his map. “This is where Reagan set off from, and he was heading to the Crescent Moon Pack, here.” Richard pointed out the areas to me on the map. “His car was attacked en route, and somehow he ended up here.” He pointed to our location. “But this is where his leg was found among dozens of other dead bodies outside of the Dire Moon Pack here.”

I looked at the distance between here and there. “That is almost a hundred miles away from here. No animal would carry a piece of meat that far. Not even a wolf for their pup, as it would mean leaving them unprotected for far too long,” I explained.

“Someone went to great lengths to try to kill Reagan, but | don’t know why. I think he was lucky to survive the car crash and even luckier to have made it here.” He paused for a moment. “Reagan told me Callan lost consciousness, so it was his wolf acting on his instincts that got him this far.”

“Or maybe it was the wolves chasing him?” I suggested.

“If you’re willing to wait, we could travel together. I am officiating the ceremony,” Richard offered. But I didn’t know how long He was staying here for, and I wanted to get to Sam.

” want to get to Sam. Call me directly if you need any more help. Leave Sam out of this,” I told him as l permitted him to contact me.

Then I drove. I drove until Bessie made noises that worried me. I pulled over into a lay-by. “You just need a rest, dont you, Bessie? You won’t give up on me. Would you?” 1 spoke to it as if Bessie could hear me. I waited for 20 minutes and then climbed back into the cab. I put the key in the ignition, hoping she would roar back to life. But she didn’t. The thermometer was stuck on high. “Damned it,” I yelled.

What do I do now? I couldn’t let Kiki run as it was daylight, and she would be spotted. I can’t make it on foot as it is too far. “Richard ought to be coming this way,” I yelled out hopefully. I’pulled out my phone and dialed his number. It rang until the voicemail kicked in. I tried and tried again, byt it always went to voicemail.

I closed my eyes as I called Sam. I told her what the problem was and the solution I had come up with. “But Richard isn’t answering his phone,” I told her.

“Just get here when you can. I won’t be doing this without you, Ellie. I need you,” she told me. Making me aware that she would postpone the ceremony if I weren’t there. “I might be late, but I will make it,” I told her.

Grasping at straws, I called Richard again, praying he answered. This time, it went straight to voicemail. He’s either on the battery is flat. Either way, I needed a plan. So I packed a bag with my essentials and set off walking.

Hoping to catch a ride from someone. Then, come dusk, Kiki can run. I will make it, Sam. I promise.
