Sam’s POV
It was dark and damp in the trunk. I didn’t feel cold, but I kept the blanket wrapped around me as a shield. Despite the awful situation, I was wounded by what Johnson said about my body. I thought I had stopped caring about what people thought of my body. Or maybe I kept it covered so no one could see it and they couldn’t comment. I guess I am not as over it as I thought.
I could hear the wheels of the car spinning like crazy, which was how I knew the car was moving quickly. In the darkness, Zola tried to comfort me. But I only felt a glimmer of hope when Sasha moved. I placed my arm over her and spoke to her. When she woke up, she wouldn’t know where she was or what was going. As I held her, I recalled what Evelyn had said about Caspian. About him being the Alpha King. “Sasha must have been pretending to be your friend this entire time,” Zola snapped.
“Not necessarily,” I responded. “Caspian could have used his Alpha command on her. No matter how much she may have wanted to tell me, she wouldn’t have been able to.” Then I thought for a few seconds. “He’d been lying to me this entire time, manipulating the people I knew.” I got upset that he had never seen me as an equal; otherwise, he wouldn’t have lied to me. He merely saw me as someone to give him powerful children. Another lying, backstabbing mate who treated me like a clueless idiot. But it wasn’t just Caspian. No, Reagan must have been in it with him. I thought of him as family, and he deceived me as well. I wanted to cry because of his deceit, but I had no more tears left. So just lay there, while my heart broke. How could they all do this to me?
“How did Caspian become Alpha King before Reagan?”
Zola questioned me, ignoring my sadness, which provoked me to be nasty toward her.
‘I don’t bloody know, do I? I am just a clueless rogue that everyone has betrayed. No wonder everyone laughs at me. I’m too naive to see the truth and too trusting that I believe their stupid lies,” Sasha groaned. I was torn about comforting her.
“Until you know otherwise. Until you know the truth. You treat her like she has treated you,” Zola told me, reminding me of my words earlier. I thought about some of my interactions with Sasha. She was always kind, supportive, and open with me. That couldn’t be forced.
She won’t have a clue about what has happened when she wakes up. She will be terrified, not just for herself but for the baby.
After what felt like forever, Sasha tried to sit up and banged her head. “Whose there? What’s going on? Where am I?”
“Sasha, it’s Sam,” I said while I was still touching her. She grabbed my hand and sniffed it.
“Where the fuck are we?” she yelled while she felt me.”Evelyn and some guy named Johnson kidnapped us. I don’t know where we are.” I told her, “What is the last thing you remember?” I asked her.
She went quiet. “Ellie said she would meet you in the gardens. I rushed off to get Caspian, as he still had a block in place.” She paused. “I was making my way through the halls. When I got caught, the strong coppery smell of blood. I went to investigate when I saw Evelyn wearing a . white dress. She was standing next to a man who was wiping blood off his hands. I looked around for a second, trying to see whose blood it was. When I turned to run, l felt a sharp pain in my arm. The next thing I know, I’m here with you.”
I chuffed. “You’ve missed so much.”
“Like what?” Sasha said in a worried tone.
You should hear the nasty things she has said to me in the past. I want you to take care of her when the time comes,” Evelyn complained about Sasha.
I wrapped my arms around myself to make myself look small. “What? This little thing? You think this little thing is an Alpha King’s mate?” Evelyn’s father asked, kneeling in front of me. I looked at him and he smirked. “Get them inside. If you’re right, Evelyn. For once in your life, you will have made me proud. If you’re wrong, you just messed up our only chance to control him, and I will kill you for being so stupid,” he told her.
“You’re a horrible piece of work, Sunak,” Sasha yelled. She must recognize him. Her outburst earned her a smack across the face from Johnson. I yelled and screamed at him. Sunak walked over to me. I expected him to hurt me.
Instead, he grabbed my chin.
“Don’t worry, my dear. For the time being, you’re a valuable bargaining chip; we wouldn’t want you getting hurt. But your friend isn’t. If you don’t do as you’re told.
She will be collateral damage.” Sasha was right; he was a nasty piece of work. No wonder Evelyn is so rotten. She’s just like her father.
