Daisy Dale paused, thinking it over. She and Catherine Blair came from totally different backgrounds—their families, their childhoods, even the neighborhoods they grew up in couldn’t have been more different.
Their habits, the way they thought about life, all of it—worlds apart.
Sure, you could overlook it for a while. But forever? That was another story. Sooner or later, it would get old.
She nodded, taking it in.
Noticing Catherine’s teary face, Daisy reached over and handed her a tissue. “Come on, Catherine, don’t cry. If your mascara runs, you’ll never hear the end of it.”
Catherine took the tissue and dabbed at her eyes, her resolve returning as the redness faded.
Shirley Carter was right.
If you want something, you have to fight for it. Otherwise, you end up like me right now—full of regrets and nothing to show for it.
She’d always been too passive before, letting others get ahead of her.
Not this time. This time, she was going to make sure Ethan Carter finally saw her.
After a few deep breaths, she stood up to leave.
——
Olivia Bennett had slept like a baby.
When she woke up, she found herself snuggled in a familiar embrace.
It took her a moment to focus, but slowly, the handsome face of the man beside her came into view.
He looked different in sleep—softer, less guarded than usual.
She grinned a little but didn’t wake him.
She lay there, just enjoying the moment, until Ethan Carter finally opened his eyes.
He looked at her, his morning voice rough and low. “How long have you been up?”
Olivia had been daydreaming. She glanced up at him when he spoke.
“Not… uh…”
Before she could finish, her nose bumped right into his chin.
She gasped, clutching her nose as her eyes watered from the sting.
Olivia sniffled, got out of bed, and slipped on her slippers. “Come on, we’ve probably slept in long enough. Let’s not keep Mom waiting downstairs.”
They got ready, splashing water on their faces and changing into fresh clothes before heading downstairs.
Adelina Lane had just come in from outside, a breeze of energy as always.
She smiled at them. “Finally up, you two? Breakfast’ll be ready soon. Go have a seat and help yourselves to some fruit.”
Olivia flopped onto the couch and grabbed a couple of grapes from the fruit bowl.
“What happened to your nose?” Adelina’s eyes narrowed in concern.
Olivia touched her nose, a little startled, and instinctively looked at Ethan.
Adelina’s gaze zeroed in on Ethan. “What did you do to Olivia?”
Olivia jumped in. “He didn’t do anything! I just accidentally bumped into him when I woke up.”
Adelina relaxed, sighing in relief. “Let me get you some cream for that.”
“No need, Mom, really. It doesn’t even hurt anymore. My skin just gets red really easily, it’s nothing.” Olivia waved her off, smiling reassuringly.
