Olivia Bennett: “Spill it.”
Nannie Bruce blinked those big, earnest eyes at her. “Can I have Susan?”
Olivia blinked right back. “Sure, but you’ll have to ask Ethan Carter about that.”
Nannie immediately pouted. “Never mind, then.”
Like she had a death wish—no way she’d go ask Ethan Carter for anything.
Olivia laughed. “Is he really that scary?”
Nannie nodded. “Well, you’re used to him now. You two are basically an old married couple, so of course you don’t notice. But think about it—if you didn’t know him, what would you think of him?”
Olivia tried to picture it but came up blank. After all this time, Ethan Carter’s image was pretty much carved in stone in her mind, and her feelings about him weren’t going anywhere.
She looked at Nannie, thoughtful. “Honestly? I can’t imagine it.”
Nannie shrugged, setting down her fork. “Makes sense. You two are all domestic now, so you’ve got rose-colored glasses. For me, he’s still a bit terrifying.”
Olivia grinned. “So, does that mean you’ll still have my back and yell at him for me if he messes up?”
Nannie’s eyes twinkled. “That’s a whole different ballgame.”
Sure, Ethan Carter was intimidating. But if Olivia really needed her, she wouldn’t hesitate.
Nannie reached over and knocked lightly on Olivia’s head. “Stop teasing. Eat your dinner.”
Olivia dropped the smile and nodded. “Okay.”
With her chin propped on her hand, Nannie watched her, a playful smile on her lips. “If you ever have a daughter, I can totally picture what she’d be like.”
Olivia looked up, curious. “What’s she like, then?”
Nannie grinned. “Just like you—kind of adorably clueless.”
After dinner, Olivia gathered up the plates, washed her hands, and, while drying them off, glanced at Nannie. “So, how’s work on this set treating you?”
Nannie perked up instantly. “Honestly? I love it. This is probably my favorite role I’ve ever had.”
She sounded almost nostalgic.
This time around, she was playing the second female lead in a period drama—a villain, technically, but a really sympathetic one. She’d gotten so into the part, she almost didn’t want to say goodbye when filming wrapped.
Olivia’s eyes sparkled with interest. “So, it’s a great character?”
Nannie nodded. “I think so! But I guess we’ll see what the audience thinks.”
Olivia grinned. “Well, here’s to hoping our Nannie becomes a breakout star and takes Hollywood by storm.”
Nannie laughed. “From your lips to God’s ears. But honestly, if it happens, great. If not, I’m still happy. I like how things are right now.”
A handful of fans, good roles coming her way, and enough privacy for a normal life—it was a pretty good place to be.
