“I…” Olivia Bennett closed her eyes, her mind filled with every little moment she’d shared with Ethan Carter lately.
“Why won’t you leave him?” Daniel Gill demanded, his voice raw with anger and heartbreak. He needed an answer, and he wasn’t letting her go without one.
With no other way out, Olivia opened her eyes and, cornered, practically growled, “Because I love him. I’m in love with him, that’s why I don’t want a divorce. Does that make you happy?”
The words hung in the air, and suddenly the whole world seemed to go silent.
Daniel froze. He’d suspected, but hearing her confess it, so certain and unflinching, hit him like a tidal wave. He felt like he was drowning.
Olivia drew in a shaky breath and let her shoulders relax. Her voice softened. “Just let go, Daniel. Let’s both get on with our lives, okay? You take your road, I’ll take mine. Isn’t that for the best?”
Daniel stared at her, his face scarily calm. Then, suddenly, a bitter smile twisted at his lips. “You’re just saying that to hurt me. I know you are…”
He grabbed her arm, one hand clamping her chin, leaning in as if he could prove her wrong just by kissing her.
Olivia frowned, shaking her head desperately, fighting him.
“Bang!”
Before Daniel could get any closer, someone yanked him away. In the next second, two hard punches landed square on him.
Caught off guard, Daniel grunted in pain, stumbling back. When he looked up and saw who it was, his eyes flared with rage.
His hands curled into fists, knuckles white.
Olivia stared at Ethan Carter, stunned. She hadn’t expected him—hadn’t even dared to hope.
Daniel’s eyes widened. “So it was you. All this time, it was you pulling strings behind my back, keeping me stuck at Carter & Sons so I couldn’t find Olivia?”
Ethan didn’t bother to answer. His look said enough. He turned away, gently guiding Olivia out of the room.
Daniel staggered back, leaning against the wall, the pain in his body forgotten. He closed his eyes and shook his head, desperate to erase the words Olivia had just said. But no matter how hard he tried, they echoed in his ears:
*Because I love him. I’m in love with him, that’s why I don’t want a divorce. Does that make you happy?*
It was like a curse. Unshakable.
How could he fight Ethan Carter now? Did this really mean it was over between him and Olivia Bennett?
