Elaine Carter was the youngest, and to top it off, she was the baby girl of the family.
Ever since she was little, everyone had doted on her just like they did with Olivia.
In front of them, Elaine was always a wild card, completely unrestrained.
She picked up a card and tossed it onto the table with a grin. “Relax. Be nice to me now, and you’ll get your payback. When you’re old and wrinkly, I’ll take care of you in your retirement.”
Carlson Baker rolled his eyes. “Wow, thanks. That’s so reassuring.”
“No need to thank me,” Elaine giggled, practically bursting with mischief. “I’m just the sort who remembers my debts.”
Carlson couldn’t help himself—he gave her a light knock on the head, earning a dramatic eye roll from Elaine.
“Your turn,” Carlson nodded, motioning for her to play.
Elaine drew a card, but Carlson quickly said, “Don’t take that one.”
Shrugging, she tossed it away.
“Full house,” Ethan Carter declared, slapping down his cards with a triumphant grin. “I win.”
Elaine gaped at him, her teeth grinding in frustration.
Carlson avoided her glare, guilt written all over his face. “Hey, I was just making conversation—I didn’t think you’d actually throw it out!”
Elaine shot daggers at him. “Carlson Baker, you’re done for. I will never, ever take care of you when you’re old.”
“Alright, alright, I’ll cover your losses today,” Carlson offered, trying to placate her.
“I don’t need your charity! Who told you I was going to lose?” Elaine huffed, glaring. “Stop sitting next to me. One of these days you’re going to make me explode.”
“Fine, I’ll zip it.” Carlson raised his hands in surrender.
Elaine just snorted, crossing her arms.
Olivia Bennett watched the two of them bicker with obvious amusement, her lips curling into a smile.
Once Ethan saw Olivia had finished her slice of pie, he slid over to make room. “Come on, your turn.”
Olivia hesitated, “No, you go ahead.”
She was worried she’d lose her shirt.
Adelina and Lily both burst out laughing.
Later, Ethan led Olivia upstairs. He closed the door behind them, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her hard on the lips. “Happy?”
The smile on Olivia’s face was impossible to hide. She nodded. “Poker’s actually pretty fun. But… is it okay to win money off Grandma and the others?”
“Don’t worry, they barely even notice this kind of cash. They used to play for way bigger stakes—like, college tuition big. Tonight, everyone just wanted to have fun, especially since you’re learning. Even if Grandma won, she’d find a way to sneak the chips back to you.”
Olivia’s eyes widened. “Guess I was holding them back, huh?”
Ethan chuckled.
Olivia tipped her head up and pressed a kiss to his chin. “You’re really something. I didn’t know you had a poker face.”
Ethan didn’t even bother with false modesty. He lifted her chin and met her gaze. “Oh, Mrs. Carter, you haven’t even scratched the surface of what I can do.”
His eyes sparkled, bright as a sky full of stars. Olivia was momentarily lost in them.
“Hmm?”
Olivia snapped out of it, shifting her eyes away. She nudged him back. “Who brags about themselves like that? Now hurry up and get changed, dinner’s almost ready downstairs.”
