A haze of steam blurred Olivia’s vision. “I’m fine, you’re okay, ah—”
She cried out in pain.
Ethan Carter’s heart just clenched up. Everything else faded away as he panicked, “Olivia, what’s wrong?”
The doctor, calm and professional, reminded him, “Mr. Carter, there’s no need to worry. The pain is normal for labor.”
Ethan shot the doctor a worried look, his eyebrows practically touching. “Can’t she get an epidural?”
The doctor shook her head. “That requires checking beforehand. Mrs. Carter came in at the last minute. It’s too late for that now.”
“I’m okay…” Olivia’s voice was weak, but she managed a small smile.
Ethan felt a wave of guilt crash over him. He grabbed her hand, pressing it to his face. “I’m so sorry. If you hadn’t been worried about me, you wouldn’t be going through this.”
If things had gone as planned, maybe she wouldn’t have to suffer like this.
“Don’t—don’t apologize… As long as you’re okay…” Olivia looked at him, tears of relief sparkling in her eyes.
Ethan gently wiped the sweat from her forehead, his voice rough with emotion. “I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere.”
Olivia tried to smile, nodding faintly.
She was progressing surprisingly fast. Twenty minutes later, she was fully dilated.
That’s when the real pain hit.
Olivia couldn’t hold back anymore. She let out a sharp cry.
The doctor coached her through it, “Okay, big breath. Push…”
One hand twisted the bedsheet, the other squeezed Ethan’s hand so tightly his knuckles turned white. Sweat poured down Olivia’s brow as she bit her lip and pushed, again and again, following the doctor’s lead.
Ethan’s heart twisted at every sound she made.
She looked kind of funny, honestly.
But thinking of her as his and Olivia’s little girl, he couldn’t bring himself to care. He just nodded, then turned his full attention back to Olivia, worry etched on his face.
The nurse watched the exchange, a little stunned.
She’d never seen a dad so unimpressed with his own newborn.
With a sigh, she carried the baby out to the waiting family.
Adelina Lane and the others had already heard the baby’s cries. As soon as they saw the nurse, they rushed over. “Doctor, how is everyone?”
“Congratulations—it’s a beautiful baby girl. Healthy as can be,” the nurse said, holding up the swaddled infant for them to see.
Adelina barely glanced at the baby before asking, “How’s Olivia?”
At that, the nurse suddenly felt three pairs of intense eyes burning into her, all waiting for an answer.
