"Like my mom."
"..."
Nannie Bruce’s grin grew wider. "You probably don’t even realize it, but every inch of you is just radiating mom energy right now."
Olivia Bennett smirked. "Well, yeah. I am a mom. Not having that would be the weird part."
Especially since she’d brought Carey into the world with so much hope and love.
"True." Nannie Bruce marveled, shaking her head. "Still blows my mind—you actually made an entire person."
Olivia’s eyes sparkled with amusement.
Sometimes, it blew her own mind too.
Nannie leaned over the crib, eyes wide as she stared at Carey. Her awe matched Olivia’s the very first time she’d seen her daughter.
Resting her elbow on the edge, she propped her chin in her palm, completely amazed. "Why is she so tiny?"
She’d been on movie sets with babies before, but never one this new, this small.
Olivia chuckled. "You can hold her if you want."
Nannie hesitated, cautious. "Will I wake her up?"
"Nah," Olivia replied, already a pro at reading Carey’s moods. "Just be gentle. She usually sleeps right through it and hardly ever cries."
"So well-behaved."
Olivia nodded. "She really is."
But as she spoke, a hint of exasperation flickered in Olivia’s eyes.
Carey was so quiet, so peaceful, that Olivia’s nerves were always on edge.
Sometimes, the silence scared her silly. She’d find herself checking if Carey was still breathing, hovering a finger near the baby’s nose for reassurance.
Only once she was certain everything was fine could she breathe easy again.
It had taken all day for her to get used to it.
Nannie’s hold was perfect—relaxed and confident, not tense and awkward like Olivia’s had been at first.
"I’ve had practice," Nannie said. "There are babies on set sometimes. When I get the chance, I like to hold them."
Olivia had to admit, "You’re way better at this than I was."
Nannie grinned. "All those hours holding other people’s babies weren’t for nothing." She leaned over, gently settling Carey back in her crib. "I should stop. Don’t want to wake her. I’ll just admire her from here."
Olivia asked, "What time are you leaving tonight?"
"Got a train at 2 AM. Should be home by six."
Olivia sighed. "You really didn’t have to come all this way."
Running around everywhere, barely getting a minute of rest.
"If I didn’t, how would I meet my goddaughter? I’m here for her, not for you," Nannie teased, glancing down at Carey with a little laugh. "Gotta get on her good side early, so she’ll love me best."
Olivia smirked. "Just wait till she won’t leave you alone—you’ll wish you hadn’t tried so hard."
