From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 360

“No way.”

Shirley Carter stood her ground, her gaze sharp with sarcasm. “Now that you know the Carter family’s cut me off, you’re just looking to toss me aside?”

“What do you think I ever got out of being married to you all these years?”

Hans Dale hated that look of hers more than anything.

So superior.

So untouchable.

Like she couldn’t be bothered to have a real conversation with him.

Well—that wasn’t entirely true. The only time she ever acted different was when Daisy Dale was around. Only then did he ever feel like they were actually a married couple.

Shirley shot him a withering glance, a bitter smile tugging at her lips. “You know exactly what you’ve gotten.”

Sure, she’d had a huge falling out with the Carters back when Adelina Lane’s mess blew up, but Lily George hadn’t actually kicked her out for good. Out in the world, she was still a Carter. And in business, Hans had definitely cashed in on being the Carter family’s son-in-law. There was no way he hadn’t.

Hans stammered, then let out a sigh. “Yeah, okay, I’ll admit I got some perks. But I haven’t treated you badly, have I? Whatever you wanted, I gave it to you. I never messed around behind your back, never embarrassed you out in public. If you’d married someone else, do you really think you’d have had it this good?”

He paused, locking eyes with her. “Shirley, I honestly don’t think I’ve been a bad husband. If you could just keep things simple, we could’ve had a decent life together. But you—you’re just too much.”

“Be honest with yourself. Besides your family name and the benefits that came with it, what have you ever given me? You still can’t let go of Lance Carter, and now you’re making moves against Ethan Carter. I’m not as powerful as your family—I can’t keep getting yanked around like this.”

He was set. He’d made up his mind a long time ago.

“Easy for you to say now,” Shirley huffed. “But what happens after the divorce? You bring some woman home, have a new kid, and suddenly Daisy’s left out in the cold?”

“That won’t happen. I promise—Daisy will be my only child. Everything I own will go to her. That’s not going to change.” Hans’s words were steady and sincere.

His feelings for Shirley were long gone, but Daisy Dale was his daughter. He really did love her.

Shirley was left speechless, his promise catching her off-guard.

Hans finished, “That’s it, then. I’ll have the papers drawn up. Don’t worry—I’m not going to take advantage of the Carter family. I’ll make sure the settlement is fair.”
