Olivia Bennett didn’t feel guilty at all. “Well, of course it’s Carey. Isn’t that right, Carey?”
She teased Carey gently.
Carey had no idea what was going on. She just giggled, her mouth open as she made all sorts of bubbly baby noises.
“See?” Olivia’s face lit up with genuine delight.
Carter couldn’t help but shake his head with a helpless grin.
The two of them spent a few minutes playing with Carey.
Just then, there was a knock at the door.
Ethan got up to open it. On the other side stood Adelina Lane, with Beatty and Elaine Carter right behind her.
“Hey, Adelina! Hi, Beatty!” Olivia called out as they came in. Then she turned, surprised to see Elaine. “Elaine! You’re back already?”
Elaine stepped into the room, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “I was planning to fly in today, but when I finished up early last night and saw there was a midnight flight, I just hopped on. Got in this morning.”
Olivia looked at her, concerned. “That must’ve been exhausting, right?”
Elaine shrugged. “Not so bad.” Her eyes drifted down to the baby in Olivia’s arms, lighting up with curiosity. “I’ve only seen her in photos and on FaceTime. She’s even cuter in person—like a little porcelain doll!”
Olivia grinned, “Want to hold her?”
Elaine’s face lit up but she hesitated, “I… I’ve never really held a baby before.”
“I’ll show you how,” Olivia said, passing Carey over while guiding Elaine’s hands.
Elaine managed to cradle the baby securely, though she looked like she was holding a priceless piece of art. Carey waved her tiny fists in the air and kept up her stream of happy baby babble.
Elaine held her tightly, hardly daring to move, her eyes wide. “Is she…talking to me?”
Ethan stood by Olivia, his lips quirked in a teasing smile. “Olivia’s the real baby whisperer—she’ll translate for you.”
Olivia shot him a look, half-amused, half-exasperated.
Ethan raised his hands in mock innocence.
Elaine wisely pretended not to notice their banter, turning her attention back to Carey. She smiled, talking softly to the baby.
Olivia nodded, “Thanks, Mom.”
It was Carey’s one-month celebration, and Adelina was practically glowing with joy. “Oh, it’s no trouble at all!” she called as she hurried out.
With Elaine and Beatty keeping her company, Ethan excused himself and went downstairs to help.
Carey had woken up early that morning, and now, after all the excitement, her eyelids started drooping. Within a minute, she’d drifted off to sleep.
Olivia gently placed her on the bed.
Elaine watched for a moment, then asked curiously, “Are you going to do one of those one-month baby photoshoots?”
Olivia nodded, “Yeah, I figured we’d do it in a bit.”
Elaine’s eyes lit up in understanding, “You’re planning to do it at home.”
“Yep. Actually, some of my friends from work are coming by soon. I thought we’d all do it together.”
Helen Adams, one of her coworkers, had been checking in ever since Carey was born.
