This afternoon, Olivia Bennett had been with Carey, keeping Beatty company.

Once Carey drifted off to sleep, Damian filled Olivia and Beatty in on what he’d heard.

Since regaining her clarity, Beatty hadn’t been able to let go of what Mason Bennett and Carmen Gates had put them through years ago.

Her eyes were burning with old anger. “Shouldn’t we do something? Stir the pot a little?”

Olivia shook her head. “Honestly, I don’t think we need to. Carmen’s not exactly a sweetheart herself. If we just wait, they’ll tear each other apart without our help.”

The seeds had been planted.

All they had to do was watch how things grew.

Everything was moving in exactly the direction they wanted, so there was no need to interfere.

They’d just wait for the perfect moment to deliver the final blow.

Damian’s expression darkened, but he nodded. “Olivia’s right. If we do too much, they’ll get suspicious. Their balance is already shot. Sooner or later, they’ll completely implode.”

When two dogs fight over a bone, it’s the third who walks away with it.

The harder they fought, the better for Damian and the others.

Beatty was quiet for a moment, then nodded when she saw she wasn’t alone in her thinking. “Alright. Guess I’m just getting impatient.”

Olivia leaned against her, resting her head on Beatty’s shoulder. “Mom, there’s no need to rush. We’ll take it slow. They’ll pay for what they did. Right now, you just need to focus on getting your strength back.”

Beatty’s memory had come back, but her body was still weak.

Olivia tilted her head so their foreheads touched, letting all the bitterness from Mason and Carmen slip away, replaced by a gentle smile. “Okay.”

The two of them sat together, side by side.
