He turned and walked away without another word.
Carmen Gates stared at his retreating figure for a long moment, unable to tear her eyes away.
She hadn’t noticed it before, but now she realized just how odd Daniel Gill was. Even in a situation like this, he barely showed any emotion. It was as if he simply didn’t care at all.
On her fourth day in the hospital, Carmen received a visit from the last person she ever wanted to see.
Hilary strutted into the room, her heels clicking loudly on the linoleum. Carmen was still lying in bed, not quite as bad off as before, but nowhere near able to move around on her own.
It was a stark contrast: Carmen battered and helpless in bed, while Hilary loomed above her, perfectly dressed and radiating disdain.
Hilary’s eyes were cold, almost mocking. Carmen felt as if a lump of ice had lodged in her throat.
She immediately called out to the nurse’s aide. “Please, get her out of here. Now.”
The aide hesitated, looking nervously between the two women.
Hilary folded her arms across her chest and shot the aide a frosty glare. “You were hired by Mason Bennett, right? I work for him. So before you make a move, you’d better think twice.”
“Your job is to take care of her. That’s it. I just need a minute to talk to her. Alone. Please leave.”
“No!” Carmen’s voice was shrill with panic. “Don’t let her stay—get her out!”
Hilary’s expression darkened. She fixed the aide with a hard stare. “Go. What do you think I’m going to do—kill her? She’s barely hanging on as it is.”
The poor aide looked like she wanted to melt into the floor. After wavering for a moment, she slipped out, shutting the door behind her.
Hilary turned to Carmen, her lips curling into a sneer. “Wow. You really are a mess, aren’t you?”
Carmen glared at her. “Get out.”
Hilary let out a cold laugh, leaning in closer.
“What do you want?” Carmen snapped, her voice shaking with fury and fear.
“What do I want?” Hilary’s smile twisted into something mean and unreadable.
