From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 395

She racked her brain but still couldn’t come up with anything useful.

Tentatively, she asked, “It’s not Rebecca, is it? I remember you used to—”

“It’s not.”

She didn’t even finish before Carlson Baker cut her off.

Elaine Carter’s brows knit together. “Then I really have no idea.”

As far as she could recall, he’d never been particularly close to any woman.

Carlson pressed his lips into a thin line, his gaze fixed on her face. Something inside him felt like it was pounding, desperate to break free from his chest.

No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t push it down.

His stare was so intense, so obvious, that Elaine noticed. She tilted her head, a curious smile playing at her lips. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

Her voice drifted over on the evening breeze, soft and light as a feather brushing across his heart, leaving a tiny crack in its wake.

That wild, restless feeling finally found its escape and surged out, impossible to hold back any longer.

Carlson drew a deep breath, his voice low and rough. “Do you want to know who it is?”

Elaine’s curiosity got the better of her; her mouth moved faster than her mind. “Who is it?”

She gripped her glass a little tighter. Carlson straightened in his seat, looked up, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a storm of emotion—fierce, but tightly reined in.

Elaine felt her heart skip. Something strange fluttered up inside her.

She parted her lips, but before she could say a word, Carlson spoke.

“You.”

Just one word.

So short, but it landed with the weight of a mountain.

Elaine’s eyes flew wide open. She stared at him, mouth agape, and for a long moment she couldn’t find her voice.

Looking at Carlson, she finally managed, “Did you… did you just say something?”
