From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 397

Elaine Carter’s eyes darkened for a split second before she registered the shadow standing beside her. “Aileen.”

It was Naylor Olson.

Elaine turned off her phone and looked up at him.

Naylor shifted awkwardly, rubbing at the back of his neck. “Sorry about the trending topic thing. I really didn’t expect it to blow up like that.”

He sounded genuinely clueless.

Elaine took a step back, her voice icy. “Don’t let it happen again.”

She wasn’t naive. It would be foolish to pretend she couldn’t see through him.

Naylor’s face stiffened, but Elaine didn’t bother with another word. She turned and walked away.

Instead of heading downstairs directly, she ducked into the restroom.

By the time she came back out, everyone else had already left.

She took the elevator to the parking garage.

Just as she reached her car and unlocked it, hurried footsteps echoed behind her—soft, but desperate.

She spun around to see a scruffy man with stubble sprinting toward her, his eyes wild and shining. “Elaine, it’s really you! I’ve finally found you!”

Elaine’s eyes widened in shock. The moment he lunged, she sidestepped, nimble and fast.

He crashed straight into her car, smacking his teeth painfully. He reeled back, hissing in pain.

But within seconds, he was up again, staring at Elaine as if nothing had happened, a crazed hunger in his gaze. He grinned, almost delirious. “Elaine, I finally found you. I like you so much.”

As he spoke, he reached out, trying to grab her.

Elaine had never experienced anything like this before. The man’s wild eyes and erratic behavior sent a chill down her spine. She’d be lying if she said she wasn’t scared.

No one else was around. Elaine’s mind raced. She made a split-second decision.

One thought flashed through her mind:

Run!

The man caught on instantly and chased after her, shouting as he ran, “Elaine, don’t run! I just like you, I won’t hurt you! Don’t be scared, just let me hug you, please—I really like you—”

He sounded possessed.

It would be crazy for her to stop.

Luckily, Elaine was fast, and she quickly widened the gap between them.

“Stay back! I’ve called the police!” she shouted over her shoulder as she sprinted.

“But Elaine, I love you!”

The sound made her stomach churn.

She pushed herself even harder, racing toward the garage exit.

Suddenly, a car screeched to a stop nearby.

The door flew open. Polished leather shoes hit the ground as a man jumped out.

“Elaine!”

It was Carlson Baker.

Relief flooded her. Elaine dashed toward him.

But just as she reached him, her knees buckled and she stumbled forward.

Carlson caught her, pulling her into his arms.

The crazed man barrelled after her, his eyes nearly bursting with rage at the sight of them together. “Let go! Elaine’s mine! Get your hands off her—”

His voice was raw with fury—almost deranged.

Carlson’s arm tightened around Elaine’s waist, shielding her behind him.

“Stay back,” he commanded, his eyes icy and sharp. As the man charged, Carlson moved.

He’d been trained since childhood. The crazy man didn’t stand a chance.
