Jessie tumbled down the stairs right in front of Juliana, and panic set in fast. She rushed over, grabbing Eleanor’s wrist so tightly it hurt. Her voice was sharp, almost shrieking. “Eleanor, when did you become so cruel?”
“The Goff family has always helped us, and you go and push her down the stairs? How could you be so heartless?”
Eleanor just looked down, a bitter little smile flickering on her lips. “Mom, if I told you I didn’t do it, would you even believe me?”
Juliana paused for a split second, then her face twisted in anger. “When did you turn into this person? Not just mean, but now you lie to my face too.”
“I saw you push her. Are you really going to stand here and deny it?”
Trying to explain was pointless. Eleanor realized that when someone’s already made up their mind, nothing you say is going to change it.
Juliana shot her a furious look. “You’re coming with me to the hospital. You’re going to apologize to Ms. Goff right now.”
Eleanor pulled her hand free, her own voice shaky. “I’m not going. I didn’t do anything wrong, so I’m not apologizing.”
Juliana’s hand twitched, ready to slap her again, but her eyes landed on Eleanor’s stomach and she stopped herself. “If you won’t go, then I’ll go by myself. I can’t believe I raised someone so ungrateful.”
She stormed off down the stairs, leaving Eleanor dizzy and clutching the banister. The world seemed to tilt. She pulled out her phone and called her best friend.
“Yolanda, can you come pick me up from my mom’s house?”
Fifteen minutes later, Yolanda showed up, worry all over her face. “Eleanor, you look awful. I’m taking you to the hospital.”
“I’m fine,” Eleanor said, forcing a faint smile. Her voice was barely more than a whisper. “I probably just have low blood sugar or something. I skipped breakfast.”
Yolanda frowned, not buying it. “You’re pregnant. You can’t just skip meals. Low blood sugar is dangerous. What if you faint...”
“There’s no baby,” Eleanor cut her off, voice trembling, eyes prickling with tears. “Yolanda, I lost the baby.”
Yolanda’s eyes went wide, her mouth falling open. “What? When?”
“Last week.”
“Does Peter know?”
Eleanor shook her head, her expression turning bitter. “I told him. He didn’t believe me. Maybe he only trusts whatever Jessie says.”
Peter had barely stepped into the hospital room when Autumn and Juliana hurried in, followed by Adam Goff.
“Jessie, are you okay?” Adam’s voice was cold, eyes sharp.
Jessie was the Goff family’s darling. If something happened to her, everyone lost it.
She bit her lip, her face so pale it almost looked translucent. Anyone would feel sorry just seeing her like that.
Adam’s glare hardened. “What exactly happened? How does my sister just fall down the stairs?”
Peter and Juliana stayed silent. Peter knew Adam would go after whoever pushed Jessie, no matter who it was or what their situation.
In the end, Peter couldn’t say a word.
Jessie’s eyes flickered. “Adam, I’m fine. It was my fault. I just wasn’t careful.”
The tension in the room broke, and everyone finally breathed a little easier.
