Just as Eleanor finished speaking, the sound of a car engine rumbled in from the front gates. She glanced outside and spotted the black Rolls-Royce Phantom. He was home.
She got up, brushed her hands together, and headed toward the entrance, ignoring the puzzled look on her daughter’s face. The moment Olga saw her father’s car, she bolted ahead, nearly knocking Eleanor over in her rush. Eleanor stumbled but kept her balance. Olga didn’t even look back. She raced outside and threw herself into the arms of the man who had just stepped out of the car.
“Daddy! You’re back! Is Mommie Jessie okay?”
After her argument with her mom, Olga dropped all pretense and clung to her dad.
Peter’s expression softened as he smoothed his hand over Olga’s hair. “She’s fine. When you have a day off, I’ll take you to visit her.”
“Okay! Daddy, I’m off the day after tomorrow.”
Peter nodded, but his gaze shifted and landed on Eleanor. The person who had caused Jessie’s fall. He gently moved Olga aside and strode over, blocking Eleanor’s way.
“You’re coming with me to the hospital. You’re going to apologize to Jessie.”
Eleanor stared at him, her eyes cool and steady. “And what if I refuse?”
He looked at her without flinching. “You want to stop your brother’s treatment?”
Eleanor clenched her fists and took a shaky breath.
Her brother, Jared, was her only weakness. He’d been born with congenital leukemia and had never found a matching donor. The fact that he’d made it to seventeen was nothing short of a miracle. Her mother, Juliana, had quit her job with the Goff family because she was pregnant with Jared. He was the last piece of her late husband, Juliana’s whole world.
Eleanor had chosen medicine for Jared. After she got married, Peter took on the mountain of Jared’s medical bills, lightening her burden in ways she could never repay. That was one reason she’d agreed to license her gene patent to Peter’s company in the first place.
Peter remembered she was three months pregnant. For a moment, his anger faded. He looked at her and couldn’t help but notice how thin she’d gotten, her stomach barely showing, her cheeks hollow. Was he imagining things, or had she actually lost weight since getting pregnant?
She was still his wife, still carrying his child. He couldn’t stay cold. Without a word, he scooped her up in his arms.
His voice was still cold, though. “You know you’re pregnant. How long are you going to keep acting like this?”
Eleanor tried to struggle, but she barely had the strength to move. Peter carried her into the dining room and set her down in a chair. He turned to the housekeeper.
“Lisa, bring Mrs. Clarkson something to eat.”
He sat down beside Eleanor and pressed his fingers to his forehead. “Eleanor, so much has happened lately. Can we just stop fighting for once?”
