From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 137

“I get it, Mr. Clarkson.”

Max watched her closely, his eyes steady and dark. “What were you thinking about while you were chopping vegetables?”

Eleanor let out a long sigh. “Mr. Clarkson, Jared just had his transplant surgery, and lately I’ve been trying to find him a new school. I guess it’s just been on my mind, that’s all.”

She didn’t mention what happened at school with the cheating accusation. Honestly, she didn’t even know the whole story herself, so there was no way she’d bring it up with Max.

He nodded. “Is it because you haven’t found a school you like yet?”

Eleanor pressed her lips together. “Something like that.”

Max could tell she didn’t want to talk about it, so he dropped it, but he didn’t forget.

With her finger still bandaged, Eleanor had lucked out and gotten a three-day break from her part-time job making dinner for Max. That meant she could spend more time at her mom’s place.

The next day, she went back to her mother’s.

“How’s Jared? Is he feeling any better?” she asked.

Juliana shrugged. “He’s alright, I guess. He skipped lunch, but he said he’d wait to eat with you tonight.”

Juliana had made a whole spread of Jared’s favorite dishes. Eleanor went to Jared’s room to get him.

“Jared, I’m here.”

Finally, Jared opened the door. He’d already checked his reflection to make sure there were no traces of tears and his eyes weren’t red. He didn’t want Eleanor to see him looking a mess.

“Are you ready to tell me what really happened at school yesterday?” she asked gently.

“Let it go, Jared. Don’t get discouraged. This weekend, we’ll look at another high school. Honestly, if this is the kind of teacher and students they have at that private school, you’re better off somewhere else.”

Eleanor meant every word. She wasn’t just trying to comfort him. But she also wasn’t about to let Jared get stuck with an accusation like that.

On Saturday, she went to Brookstone High herself, checking out the hallway Jared had mentioned. At the end of the corridor, there was a security camera that would have caught everything.

Eleanor snapped a picture of the camera and went straight to the admissions office to find Mr. O’Hart.

When Mr. O’Hart saw her walk in, he sneered. “Ms. Rolland, I assume Jared already told you what happened during his exam?”

“I’m sorry, but Brookstone High doesn’t accept students with questionable character.”

Eleanor gave a short laugh. “Questionable character? Mr. O’Hart, are you really going to judge Jared’s entire character based on a single piece of paper?”
