Her voice was soft and a little shaky. “Aunt Jessie, you’re kind of scary right now.”
That snapped Jessie out of her daze. She remembered, suddenly, that she’d spent the night with Peter’s daughter curled up beside her.
“I’m so sorry, Olga. You pushed my hand just now and it hurt a bit. I overreacted. Please don’t be mad at me, okay?”
Olga glanced at Jessie’s arm in a cast and remembered her mom was the one who’d hurt Jessie in the first place. It clicked for her. “Sorry, Mommie Jessie. Let me kiss it better for you.”
With Olga showering her with kisses and a gentle rub, they finally made it to the preschool—at ten o’clock.
Ms. Bennett looked up, surprised. She’d never had a kid show up this late before.
“Olga, you have to be on time tomorrow. Do you understand?”
Olga stuck her lip out, a little stubborn. “Got it.”
Ms. Bennett could only sigh. She knew Olga was the princess of Horizon Bio, so she couldn’t be too strict. She just waved Olga into the classroom.
A couple of kids immediately crowded around. “Olga, you’re so cool. How come you can come to school at ten?”
Olga loved hearing nice things about herself and really hated getting scolded. She always had. It was one of the reasons she kept her distance from her mom.
Now, she puffed her chest out and grinned. “Because I’m awesome, obviously.”
“The teacher doesn’t even dare yell at me.”
“Whoa! Olga, can you tell the teacher I don’t want to get up early tomorrow? Waking up is so hard.”
Olga didn’t actually have that kind of power, but her pride wouldn’t let her admit it. “Sure, I’ll handle it.”
Within seconds, she was surrounded by kids, all begging her to help them sleep in too.
Ms. Bennett had no idea what kind of chaos tomorrow would bring.
...
He barely cracked an eyelid, but his whole presence radiated authority.
“You want me to pay you for using your couch?” Max’s voice was lazy, but Linden knew better than to argue.
“Actually, yeah. You owe me. I just told someone about a job opening at your company. She’s probably submitting her resume right now.”
Linden felt he deserved a little something for being so helpful.
Max gave a crooked smile. “Alright, check your phone.”
Linden glanced down.
You’ve received a transfer of 404 dollars. Please accept the payment.
Linden stared at the message, stunned. Was this guy for real?
