Eleanor gave a half-hearted smile. "Mr. Clarkson, there's really no rush. My ex-husband still hasn't sent the money. He says he needs to scrape together enough cash first."
Max let out a disappointed sigh. "Wow, your ex must be pretty broke then."
Eleanor just stared at him, completely at a loss for words. "Can we just change the subject?"
But Max wasn't about to back off. "Ms. Rolland, you should think about my offer a little more."
"I never planned on having kids anyway, so the two of us teaming up could actually work. You managed to get a decent settlement from your ex, but he comes off as pretty petty. I wouldn't be surprised if he tries to make things difficult for you down the line."
"If we got married, I promise I wouldn't let him touch a hair on your head."
He sounded so full of himself, but the thing was, Max could actually back it up.
"And if you're worried I might be after your money, we can always get a prenup. Half of what I have would be yours, but your money would stay yours."
"Also, just to clear things up, I can't have kids, but I'm definitely not into men. That's just not my thing. Honestly, I just want to take care of my health. What's the point of having money if you can't even enjoy it?"
Max made everything sound so reasonable that Eleanor almost found herself tempted.
"Alright, Mr. Clarkson, I'll give it some serious thought. But it's already eight o'clock. I really need to get to work."
Max smiled. "No problem. I'll be waiting to hear from you."
The second Eleanor left his place, she felt like she was making her escape. This Mr. Clarkson talked way too much. Where was the cold, mysterious vibe everyone warned her about? The guy was basically a walking megaphone. It almost gave her a headache.
She'd felt a little flutter in her chest for a moment, but her head won out pretty quickly. She'd just gotten out of one mess. No way was she diving into another without a really good reason.

He finally picked up the file, skimming through it.
Eleanor.
Heh, Juliana really had some guts, having his kid after all this time.
"Hmm, the girl doesn't look much like me. Weird. She doesn't look like her mother either."
Patrick looked up, clearly suspicious. "Are you sure she's mine?"
"Of course she's yours!" Jessie rolled her eyes hard. "How many deadbeat ex-husbands do you think Juliana has? We already checked. Eleanor has zero biological connection to Benjamin. That means you're her father. Like it or not."
Patrick stroked his chin, lost in thought. He had to admit, he hadn't looked bad when he was younger.
