Max just smiled, clearly unbothered by the way she’d acted earlier. “Sure. Thanks, Ms. Rolland.”
Eleanor went back to her apartment, shook out her umbrella, dropped her bag, and headed straight to Max’s place. Fifteen minutes later, she set a steaming bowl of noodles in front of him.
He took a big slurp, closed his eyes, and let out a satisfied sigh. “Wow. This is amazing. Seriously, I think it’s the best spicy noodles I’ve ever had.”
Hearing that made Eleanor’s heart feel warm and light.
She grinned. “As long as you like it.”
Out of nowhere, Max asked, “So, what was that nightmare about last night?”
Eleanor hesitated, then told him about the creepy guy she’d run into after work the day before.
Max’s expression darkened. “There are people like that hanging around?”
“I’ll have the admin team talk to security tomorrow. We’ll get more patrols.”
Eleanor chewed her lip. “Isn’t that a lot of trouble, just because of me?”
“It’s no trouble. And don’t think you’re overreacting. Being careful is important. It isn’t just for you. We need to make sure all the women at the company are safe.”
Max didn’t even finish his food. He set his fork aside and immediately made the call to get things moving.
The anxiety that had been sitting heavy in Eleanor’s chest finally eased. She realized that in every way, Max really was the kind of partner you could rely on for anything. No matter what came up, he always found a way to handle it.

Patrick had been lurking for a few days when he noticed there were suddenly way more security guards around the office building. He cursed under his breath, surprised at just how cautious his daughter was. Eleanor’s commute left him no chance to get close. The subway was a dead end, and she never walked anywhere alone at night.
After a week of watching and waiting, Patrick realized he wasn’t getting anywhere. He had to change his plans.
Patrick tried to keep up, but he was out of breath almost instantly. “Damn kid runs like a rabbit,” he muttered, frustrated.
Jared didn’t stop until he reached home, chest heaving, heart pounding.
Juliana spotted him as she came into the entryway, frowning. “Jared, didn’t you have your umbrella? What are you running for? The doctor told you no heavy exercise, remember?”
She kept fussing as Jared collapsed onto the couch, slowly catching his breath.
“Mom, there was this weird guy—he said his name was Lee—who came looking for you. He wanted to come into the house. I didn’t like the way he looked at me, so I just ran.”
Juliana’s hand shook, and her glass slipped to the floor, shattering.
“Wait… who did you just say was here?”
