There was no way Eleanor could forget features like his. She remembered that day at the coffee shop, right after her meeting with Mr. Sidler, when they nearly bumped into each other. Now, that same man walked in and claimed the center seat at the table. He looked completely at ease, his eyes sharp and clear, showing no sign he recognized her.
“Alright, Ms... Rolland, is it? You can introduce yourself now.”
Eleanor pressed her hands against her knees, trying to steady herself. She took one deep breath and started to speak.
The interview was going well until someone on the panel leaned forward. “Ms. Rolland, I have to ask. Why did you transfer from the research lab to the secretarial department? Those are two pretty different fields.”
Eleanor was ready for this. She kept her voice calm. “The company restructured a bit. I was moved out of the R&D lab, but I never stopped my research. In fact, I’ve applied for a personal gene patent.” She looked at them, steady and honest. “That’s also why I left my last job, to be honest.”
Her answer sounded like it explained everything, but really, it kept a lot hidden. Still, just having a patent was enough to show them she was the real deal.
“Mr. Clarkson, do you have any questions?” someone asked, turning to the man at the end of the table.
Max had been quiet so far, flipping through her resume with real focus. Now he looked up, a slight smile on his lips. “Ms. Rolland, are you married?”
The question caught her off guard for a second, but then she remembered—at twenty-seven, people always asked about marriage at interviews.
She gave a small, honest smile. “I’m in the process of divorcing, so technically, yes, I’m still married.” She paused, then added, “But you don’t have to worry, I’m not planning to remarry anytime soon.”
Around the table, a few eyebrows went up. So young, already getting divorced.
Max’s lips curved a little higher. “Alright. I have no further questions.”
When Eleanor left the room, her hands were damp with sweat. That Clarkson Corporation president had a way of filling the room, even when he barely said a word. Some people just have that presence.
They told her she’d get a response within a week, but after meeting the president himself, she wondered if she’d hear back sooner.
“Eleanor, where are you?”
“I just finished an interview...”
“Eleanor, it’s your fault Peter’s mad. The hospital is trying to send your brother home today. Get over here right now!”
Eleanor’s brows drew together. “How can that be? I paid his medical bills just the other day.”
“I don’t know what happened. All I know is you’re the one who caused this, so you’d better come fix it.”
The call ended with a sharp click.
