Eleanor didn’t even glance back at them. She walked into the building, ready to clock in for another day at work. She wasn’t looking for anyone’s thanks. She just hadn’t wanted to make things harder for another woman. If they wanted to call her a saint, fine by her.
When she got into the elevator, the energy was different. People clapped and grinned, clearly impressed.
“Eleanor, that was incredible!”
“For real, it felt so good to watch. Can you believe that Wesley guy? Almost forty and actually thought you’d be his side chick.”
“And the way the company handled it? Mr. Clarkson is a legend.”
It was true. Stuff like this—real support from the top—meant more to people than any bonus or perk ever could.
Billy had seen everything from his spot in the corner. As he walked around the office later, he could feel the lift in everyone’s mood. The team just seemed more fired up than usual. But Billy didn’t get to where he was by only looking at the surface. He watched Eleanor at her desk, busy as ever, and thought, This one isn’t as simple as she looks.
Wesley, on the other hand, had just been hit with more humiliation than he could handle. Not only had he been forced to apologize, he’d been doused with coffee in front of everyone. And now the video of it all was blowing up online, with strangers everywhere reliving his embarrassment.
He shot Sydney a furious look. “Tomorrow, you’re coming back to sign the divorce papers. Don’t think you’ll get a single cent. You’re the one who messed up. You leave with nothing.”
“Seventeen years of marriage, and the only thing you ever did for this family was give me a son. I can’t do this anymore.”
Sydney felt completely hollow. So all those years of helping his family, all the support her family had given—none of it mattered. It was like everything she’d done had been for nothing. The man she’d shared a bed with for seventeen years was nothing but a heartless stranger.
Her voice was quiet, but steady. “Fine. Let’s get a divorce. I don’t want your money, and you can have custody of our son.”
“I don’t want to be with you either.”
