“My dear daughter, if you don’t trust this DNA report, you can check it yourself.”
He yanked out a few strands of his own hair, slipped them into a clear plastic bag, and sealed it tight.
“Take this. Go run your own test. That should settle it, right?”
Patrick Lee wore a half-smile that sent a chill down Jessie’s spine. “But I’m only giving you three days. Once you get the results, don’t try to wriggle out of it. I want ten million wired to my account within three days. If I don’t get the money, I’ll go straight to the Goff family and tell them you’re not really their daughter. At that point, I have nothing left to lose, so why not? Isn’t that right, my dear daughter?”
The way he said “daughter” made Jessie’s skin crawl. She could barely stand the thought that this man might actually be her father.
If any of this was true, if Juliana really had switched the babies all those years ago, the Goff family would definitely turn their backs on her. Jessie knew she couldn’t let them find out the truth.
Just picturing Eleanor one day lording it over her made Jessie want to scream.
“Ten million is too much. I don’t have that kind of money,” Jessie tried to bargain, her voice tight. “If it turns out you’re telling the truth, the most I can give you is five million.”
Patrick’s eyes went cold. “You think I’m some beggar? Your father’s a company president, and you’re telling me you don’t have money? You’re a rich girl, stop pretending.”
“Ten million is just too much,” Jessie gritted out, biting her lip so hard she tasted blood.
“Ten million. No discussion,” Patrick said, his eyes empty of anything but greed. “Here’s my account number. If I don’t get the money by the deadline, I’ll pay your adoptive father a personal visit and see how he likes the news.”
Patrick slid out of the car, lowered his cap, and disappeared around the corner.
Jessie dug her nails into her palms, fighting the urge to scream.
Her phone rang. Peter was calling again. She forced herself to steady her breathing and answered. “Hey, Peter.”
“How’s the wedding dress shopping going?”
Jessie’s chest was so tight it hurt. She pushed the words out, trying to sound normal. “It was fine. Peter, can we set our wedding for the tenth of next month?”
“That’s really soon.”
