Real fear finally settled over Juliana. Her hands shook.

"I won’t, Jessie. She’s already cut me out of her life, I..." Her words came out between hiccuping sobs. "I won’t bother her again."

Just thinking about her own parents made Jessie feel sick.

"And don’t come looking for me, either."

Jessie left in a storm of anger, slamming the door behind her. Juliana sank to the floor, her whole body heavy with regret.

She covered her face and cried, wishing she could take it all back. Her own daughter barely spoke to her, her adopted daughter had cut her off completely, and now even her son sided with a sister who wasn’t even related by blood.

Juliana still didn’t know that Eleanor and Max had gotten married. If she did, she’d regret everything even more.

Jessie stayed up all night, unable to sleep. She sat in her car the next morning, fixing her makeup and trying to cover up the dark circles under her eyes. Then she drove to Adam’s office.

"Adam, are you busy?"

Adam was getting ready to head out for a round of golf. When he saw Jessie, he smiled, his eyes soft. "What brings you here today?"

"I missed you," Jessie said, putting on her sweetest voice.

Adam knew her too well. She only acted like this when she wanted something.

"Alright, spill it. Is there something you want to buy, or did you get yourself into trouble again?"

Jessie grinned. "Adam, you really are the one who cares about me most."

"I’m planning the wedding, and I want to buy another apartment. The one I like is thirty million..."
