He glanced out at the garden where the Alaskan Malamute was sprawled out, completely at ease. “You’re actually less annoying than Max, Loppy. He drives me up the wall.”
“Loppy, come here,” Max called, his voice carrying across the lawn.
Loppy perked up and trotted over, tongue lolling out in a goofy grin. Max bent down and ruffled his fur. “You’re meeting your mom soon, so try not to freak her out, okay?”
Loppy let out a happy bark, as if he understood every word. He’d always listened to Max, never to George.
Just then, Katie walked through the door. She stopped short when she saw Max, a little stiff. “Max.”
Ever since Max had fired her from the family business, then lectured her about eating more walnuts for her brain, Katie had started treating him like a cat treats a mouse. She wanted to keep her distance.
Max just nodded with that cool, unreadable vibe. “You’re back.”
“Yeah. I went to Jessie’s for a bridesmaid dress fitting. I’m heading upstairs.”
She needed to be at Jessie’s house by seven in the morning for the wedding. The thought made her tired already.
Max shot her a look, his tone dry. “Kind of impressive, you know. Being a bridesmaid for the same person twice.”
Katie didn’t know what to say to that. It was true though. Jessie Goff’s second wedding should have been low-key, but Jessie wanted it big, so here she was again, playing bridesmaid.
Knowing Max wasn’t a fan of her best friend, Katie just pressed her lips together and gave a small nod. “I’m going up.”
She figured Max wouldn’t show up at the wedding anyway.
Later, Eleanor’s car pulled up outside. By that time, Katie was already upstairs.
Eleanor stepped out and spotted a man and his dog waiting in the garden by the gate. She hadn’t seen Max’s dog on her last visit.
“Is he yours?” she asked.
