Since a lot of people brought their kids along, the company trip ended up pretty laid-back, with barely any official group activities. Instead, everyone just split off into little squads with their work buddies.
Eleanor, Skyler, and a handful of others who hadn’t dragged their families along wandered through the old town. The streets were lined with all kinds of artsy shops. Eleanor picked out a few cute things, but when she went up to pay, the cashier waved her off and said everything was on the house.
She blinked, caught off guard. Free stuff? That never just happens.
“Why? Is there some sort of promo?” she asked.
The cashier grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “Well, our manager wants to know if he can add you on messenger.”
Skyler and the others tried not to laugh. So that was it. One of their own had caught the manager’s eye.
Eleanor had run into this kind of thing back in college, but after getting married and having a kid, it had been ages since something like this happened. She felt a bit awkward. “Sorry, but please just ring me up like normal. I’m married.”
“Aw, really?” The cashier looked genuinely disappointed. “Alright, then.”
When they got outside, Skyler nudged her, teasing, “Eleanor, if only you were single. We’d all be scoring freebies thanks to you.”
Eleanor just laughed it off and chalked it up to a harmless little moment.
But things got awkward at dinner. Max gathered everyone together for a big meal and told them the company was picking up the tab. Someone just had to bring up what happened at the shop.
Eleanor caught Max’s look from across the table, that half-smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes, and her stomach dropped.
Later, Skyler and the others wanted to go for a walk by the lake. They invited Eleanor along, but she shook her head and made an excuse.
She’d just grabbed her key card, ready to head back to her room and squeeze in a bit of work, when she suddenly felt a familiar presence behind her. A strong arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her swiftly into his room.
She barely had time to process what was happening before Max’s lips found hers.
As soon as she realized it was him, her racing heart started to calm. His kiss was urgent, a little rough, almost like he was punishing her. He bit down on her lip, just enough to sting. She tasted a hint of blood, but then his lips softened, and his tongue soothed the tiny wound.
