The words hit Jessie and Peter like a slap.
Yolanda couldn’t help grinning. “Wow, so she’s already being called ‘Mom’ and you said I was spreading rumors?”
Katie’s face fell.
Jessie forced herself to speak. She refused to leave the party with her reputation in tatters. “Uncle Max, you’re so funny. That was a total misunderstanding. Olga just called out by accident, that’s all.”
Max let out a cold laugh. “Sorry, I don’t remember ever having a niece your age.”
He looked right through her. “And about your misunderstanding, you don’t need to explain it to me. As long as this gentleman’s wife believes you, that’s enough.”
Jessie’s face was so dark, it looked like it might rain.
For the first time in her life, she’d been humiliated in front of a crowd.
And the worst part was, the man who did it was someone she couldn’t afford to anger.
Peter felt the same sting, only worse. The person who’d embarrassed him was exactly the one he’d been hoping to impress.
Yolanda’s lips curled in delight. Even though it was her first time meeting Max, watching him put those two in their place had made her night.
Marianna gave her a quick pinch on the back of her hand, a silent reminder to dial it down. Yolanda pouted but let it go.
Hunter knew his brother tended to offend people the moment he showed up. But for these young ones, it hardly mattered.
He tried to smooth things over. “James, Max, why don’t we go chat upstairs for a bit?”
James was only too happy to agree. The last thing he wanted was an ugly scene at his charity gala.
Before heading off, he glanced at Yolanda and her mom. “Linden said he’ll be here soon.”
Marianna nodded right away. “That’s great, James. No hurry, you go ahead.”
“So this is where you’ve been!” Jessie’s voice was shrill.
Eleanor shot her a cold glance. “Did you need something?”
She had no idea what had just happened outside or that Max had come to her defense again.
“Eleanor, let me ask you, what’s your relationship with that guy from SKC who helped you the other day?” Jessie’s jealousy was obvious. It was bad enough she got mocked tonight, but she absolutely couldn’t accept the idea of Max having anything to do with Eleanor.
A man like Max was out of reach even for her, so why should Eleanor get a shot?
Eleanor snorted. “What guy? Jessie, do you ever think about anything besides men?”
Strangely, Jessie calmed down a little after hearing that.
“Hmph. Don’t think being friends with Yolanda means she can help you out of everything.”
