From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 4

“Yes, thank you.”

Eleanor glanced at the nameplate by the office door, Linden Sidler, then gave a small, polite smile as she walked in.-

“Hello, Ms. Rolland. Please, have a seat. My colleague told me you’re here to talk about a divorce.”

“Hello, Mr. Sidler. I wanted to ask if these could count as proof of his affair.” She handed him her phone.

Linden studied the photos for a moment, his eyebrows lifting just a little. He took his time before shaking his head.

“Ms. Rolland, proving this is tricky. We can give it a try, but at most, it looks like an emotional affair. That isn’t really considered a fault in court.”

He paused, then asked, “The real question is, do you want custody of your daughter?”

Eleanor’s heart tightened. Her daughter...

“I’m sorry, Mr. Sidler. I haven’t decided yet.”

“That’s okay. There’s no rush. Take your time. I’ll draft two versions of the divorce agreement for you. One if you decide to fight for custody, and one if you don’t.”

Eleanor took the papers and stood up. “Thank you for your help today, Mr. Sidler.”

Linden walked her out, then headed to the back room. “Max, you can come out now.”

A man stepped forward, half in shadow, the light outlining the sharp angles of his face. He spun a silver lighter between his fingers, his expression cool.

“Is it done?”

“How did it go?” Max asked.

Linden gave a little smile. “Sorry, I can’t talk about a client’s privacy.”

He hesitated, then added, “But Max, isn’t her husband, Peter, your nephew from the other side of the family?”

“You sure you want to help your nephew’s wife find a divorce lawyer?”

“So dramatic.”

“Come on, Olga, don’t mind your stingy mom. Here, let Grandma feed you.”

Eleanor stared at her daughter, and then at her mother-in-law, who spoiled Olga endlessly. Something inside her settled.

She went upstairs, took a few documents from her bag, and knocked on the door to Peter’s study.

“I bought some insurance for our daughter. You’re the beneficiary. I need you to sign here.”

Peter glanced at the title and signed at the bottom of the first page without thinking. Eleanor leaned over and turned to the second signature line for him. He paused for a second, then signed there too.

A soft, clean scent drifted from her. Peter swallowed and leaned back, putting a little space between them.

“Eleanor, you’re pregnant. Maybe go easy on the perfume.”

Eleanor didn’t bother to explain it was just her body wash. She gripped the agreements a little tighter. “Sure. Got it. You can get back to work now.”
