Eleanor wasn’t much of a talker, so she just signed her name without a word.
Peter scrawled his signature and walked out right away, leaving his lawyer standing there looking mortified.
Honestly, the poor guy had never handled such a humiliating case in his life.
His own client had surrendered halfway through. What a mess.

Linden won, just like he said he would. “Ms. Rolland, that went even smoother than I thought.”
Eleanor gave him a soft smile. “That’s because you covered all the bases.”
She’d been careful from the start, making sure not to use her own account for the money.
All the funds were in her brother’s account, and her mother had transferred it there. It had nothing to do with Eleanor’s finances.
Later, she’d given her mom the cash back. No paper trail.
“I was sure they’d argue it was marital property, though.”
Eleanor had expected the same thing.
But Peter had given up before even trying. Why he did, Eleanor didn’t really care.
She just figured he couldn’t handle any more embarrassment.
“Mr. Sidler, do you have time today? I’d really like to buy you dinner.”
She was genuinely grateful to Linden.
He hesitated for a second. She’d already invited him a few times, and it would be rude to keep turning her down. “Sure, I’d love that.”
“Linden? What a surprise. You’re here too?”
The new voice was smooth and warm. Eleanor looked up and found herself staring right into his smiling eyes.
“Ms. Rolland, you’re here as well.”
“Did you two just come from court?”
Linden didn’t even know what to say.
He felt like he might actually laugh out of sheer frustration.
“Yeah. Small world, huh?”
Eleanor blinked. “Mr. Sidler, you know Mr. Clarkson?”
Linden bristled. “What happened to your driver?”
“My driver’s off today, and my car’s out of gas.”
Linden practically ground out the word. “Fine.”
Eleanor figured that was just how the two of them joked and didn’t step in.
When it was time to get in the car, she hesitated.
If Mr. Sidler sat up front by himself, he really would look like their chauffeur.
She was about to head for the passenger seat when Max beat her to it, opening the back door. “Hop in. You can sit in the back.”
Eleanor paused, then nodded. “Alright.”
Linden’s eyelid twitched.
Just as he thought, a second later Max slipped into the back seat, too.
He shot Linden a lazy grin. “You’re leading the way, Mr. Sidler.”
Linden muttered to himself, barely loud enough to hear. Damn it.
