Eleanor lifted her chin and straightened her back, eyes calm and clear as water. “I’m not crazy.”
“Peter, we’re done.”
She kicked all three of them out of her room.
It was the first time a woman had ever slapped Peter. His cheek burned, anger rising hot in his chest. But beneath the rage, he couldn’t help wondering what she really meant by “we’re done.”
Their little girl, startled by her mother’s outburst, tugged at her father’s pant leg. “Daddy, Mommy is…” She fumbled for the right word. Somehow, even calling her ‘bad’ didn’t seem strong enough.
Autumn was furious. She banged on the door, voice sharp and demanding. “Eleanor, open up! Who do you think you are, hitting my son? Come out here and explain yourself!”
Peter frowned. “Mom, just leave it. Take Olga to school first.”
...
Eleanor finished packing. Everything she owned fit into a single suitcase. She placed the hospital report and divorce papers in an envelope and slipped it under the lamp by the bed, keeping a copy for herself.
She opened the door and heard a woman’s sweet, familiar voice drifting from the study upstairs.
“Peter, Eleanor really crossed the line this time. How could she hit you?”
“Come here, let me put some ointment on it. You’re the man of the house. What she did was just wrong.”
Peter looked at Jessie, the woman who had his whole heart. He couldn’t hide the affection in his eyes.
He spoke softly, almost like a secret. “Jessie.”
Jessie felt her heart skip under his gaze. “Peter, why are you looking at me like that?”
Suddenly, she slipped and fell straight into his arms. By accident, her lips brushed his for a split second.
Eleanor turned away. “Believe what you want.”
Without another word, she walked off, not caring about the looks on their faces.
Jessie stood there, awkward and pretending to be worried. “Peter, Eleanor is still pregnant. Maybe you should go after her?”
Peter slipped his hand into his pocket, jaw tight. “No. She’ll come back on her own.”
But next time she came back, he’d definitely settle the score for that slap.
...
Outside, Eleanor stood still for a moment, then sent the video she’d just recorded to her lawyer.
[Mr. Sidler, does this count as proof of his affair?]
