Daniel gave a small nod. It really was Eleanor.
He’d tried to get her on his team back then, but Tim had swooped in first. Daniel knew just how talented she was. It was a real shame she got married right after graduation, switched careers, and ended up working at her husband’s company.
He honestly never thought he’d see her here.
“Well, that’s nice. She used to be one of my students.”
“Really? What are the odds?”
Right then, the supervisor knocked and called Eleanor out.
Eleanor glanced up and caught sight of the group outside the glass. She froze for a second when she recognized Max, and then her eyes landed on Dr. Bates. Her breath caught. It was really him.
She disinfected her hands, stepped outside, and pulled off her mask. Her face lit up with happiness, but she kept her tone professional and respectful. “Dr. Bates.”
Daniel let out a warm laugh. “Eleanor, how long has it been since you visited the campus? You never come see us anymore.”
Eleanor gave a sheepish smile. “I was actually planning to head back this weekend. I never thought I’d run into you here.”
“Yeah? If that’s true, I’m staying put this weekend. Don’t think you can get out of it.”
He was still just as playful as she remembered.
Eleanor laughed softly. “I wouldn’t dare.”
“All right, get back to work. I won’t keep you.”
Daniel wanted to ask so much more, but he knew this wasn’t the time.
Max shot Eleanor a look that said he was thinking about a lot, then gave a slight smile. “Dr. Bates, now that we’ve finished the tour, why don’t we grab some dinner together?”
Daniel agreed right away.
As they walked off, Eleanor’s coworkers slowly snapped out of their shock.
“Wait, Eleanor, you were Dr. Bates’s student? You never said anything about that.”
To be exact, she’d been mentored by a friend of Dr. Bates. The memory made Eleanor’s eyes dim a little. She honestly didn’t even know if her old professor would want to see her again.
“Well, you never asked,” she said quietly.
Max’s lips pressed together for a moment. “Technically, I shouldn’t, but since you asked, I’ll have someone pull it up.”
Fifteen minutes later, Max opened a photo on his phone and slid it over to Daniel.
“Dr. Bates, this is her job application.”
Daniel enlarged the image right away, his gaze landing first on her marital status.
Divorced.
He scrolled down to her work history. She’d been transferred from the research department to the secretarial pool.
That scumbag had wasted Eleanor’s talent and shoved her into a secretary’s role.
The anger burned inside him.
“Thank you for your help today, Mr. Clarkson,” Daniel said, his face growing darker by the second.
Max watched him, a faint smile tugging at his lips. Looked like someone was about to have a very bad day.
