“There’s really nothing here I need to keep from you. I just didn’t want you to worry so much,” Leonard said quietly.
All this chaos—he could bear it alone. The last thing he wanted was to drag Marguerite into the mess. He worried, too, about what it would mean for Marguerite if she learned the truth; how would she ever face Winifred after that?
“You’ve told me before, if I ever have a problem, I should come to you first. You promised you’d help me fix it.”
“Well, now I want to give that same promise back to you. You don’t have to carry all this alone, Leonard. Whatever comes our way, let me share the load with you,” Marguerite insisted.
But the truth was, until she fully understood what was happening, her mind would inevitably run wild. She couldn’t help but suspect there was something unresolved between Leonard and that woman.
Leonard glanced at her, as if wanting to say more, but held back.
After a moment, he spoke again. “I’ll handle everything about her. I won’t let her disrupt your life or cause you any trouble. If she ever tries to contact you, no matter what she says, don’t let it get to you. Just tell me, and I’ll take care of it.”
“Alright,” Marguerite replied softly.
She trusted him. She truly believed there was nothing between Leonard and Winifred; if there was anything at all, it was probably just a one-sided hope on Winifred’s part.
If Leonard actually had feelings for her, they would have married by now. He did care for Winifred, perhaps out of guilt, but things had gone too far for them to ever be together. That alone was proof they weren’t right for each other.
Before she realized it, they’d arrived at his family’s old manor.
“Don’t worry, Grandma. Leonard’s always so attentive. He’s been looking after me really well,” Marguerite replied, her voice gentle.
“I’ve just been swamped with work lately, so I haven’t had a chance to visit. Otherwise, I would have come sooner to see you.”
“Oh, don’t worry about that, darling,” her grandmother said, waving her hand dismissively. “You young people are busy building your careers, I understand. I won’t hold it against you. And when I have the chance, I’ll come visit you, too!”
As they chatted, the old lady looked Marguerite over with growing fondness. The more she saw, the more she liked her. In her heart, she knew: Marguerite was the only one who could ever be her grandson’s wife.
Leonard watched the two of them, his heart light. It had been a long time since he’d seen his grandmother this happy. All he’d ever wanted was for her to see him settled with the right person, to finally have a family of his own.
