The whole family regarded Marguerite with undisguised hostility. They’d never thought much of her to begin with—and now, seeing Leonard so openly defy them on an occasion like this, they were utterly scandalized.
There was no denying that, at times, Leonard still made them nervous. As much as they resented him, they couldn’t afford to burn bridges completely—not when they still relied on the company’s money.
But Marguerite was a different matter. Even if the old matriarch was fond of her, so what? Everyone knew about Marguerite’s past. She was nowhere near good enough for Leonard.
“Who do you think you are, coming into our home and telling us what to do? Do you really think you’re that important?” one of them sneered.
“I heard you and your ex had a pretty nasty falling out. And someone like you thinks she’s fit to marry into the Murphy family? What a joke!” the other chimed in.
The two of them volleyed cruel barbs back and forth, their faces twisted in disdain, making no effort to hide their contempt for Marguerite.
They were still in the middle of their tirade when Mrs. Murphy strode in from outside. She’d had a critical event to attend earlier that day, but she hadn’t forgotten her mother-in-law’s birthday. The moment her obligations ended, she’d rushed straight home.
As luck would have it, she walked in just in time to hear the commotion and see Marguerite being cornered. Without hesitation, she swept over to them, her presence sharp and commanding.
“As for the rest of you, do whatever you like. It has nothing to do with us anymore. From now on, we’re out.”
Mrs. Murphy was fiery—quick to anger, but always fair. And her devotion to the old matriarch was genuine. She hated seeing these ugly scenes play out again and again, and she was determined to put a stop to it.
Leonard agreed wholeheartedly. He’d been wanting to bring his grandmother over for ages. The company’s main projects were now based in his city—he’d made sure of that. The headquarters might still be here, but all the important work had been shifted elsewhere, away from Aaron’s watchful eye. Leonard had orchestrated this himself, not wanting Aaron or the rest of the family meddling, so he’d moved every major project out of their reach.
“Alright, I’m in,” the old lady answered without hesitation. She didn’t even spare the others another glance.
