She couldn’t help but bring up what had happened that day, if only to make sure he understood exactly what his mother had done.
Leonard honestly hadn’t expected his mother to go to such extremes, nor had he imagined things would spiral this far.
“I’ll talk to my mother and make things clear to her. Until you finish your physical therapy, I’m not letting you leave. As for what happened today, I won’t hold it against you, but from now on, you have to take better care of yourself.”
“Even if you get hurt by accident, you need to listen to the doctors. The sooner you start treatment, the faster you’ll recover.” Leonard’s tone was calm, almost detached.
It was as if he’d grown used to all of this—so much so that it barely registered anymore. The routine was always the same: he’d say his piece, Winifred would nod obediently and promise to cooperate, but somehow, it never quite played out that way.
Whenever he wasn’t around, Winifred resisted her therapy, and it seemed like the sessions made no difference at all.
“I’ll have the driver take you home. Get some rest today. Starting off with such intense therapy is hard enough—you deserve a break.”
Leonard figured that after everything that had happened, there was no point in pushing her any further today. It was better to just call it a day and let her go home early.
Winifred nodded. To her, skipping rehab even for a day felt like a small mercy.
He’d made himself perfectly clear: he couldn’t be there all the time, and there were plenty of things demanding his attention. He hoped she would understand.
“I know, Leo,” Winifred said softly, putting on a show of wounded innocence. “But…I’m a little hungry. Could you stay and have dinner with me before you leave?”
She’d said so much already, but in the end, all she really wanted was for him to stay.
Right now, nothing Leonard said could get through to her. She was starting to feel desperate. She didn’t want him to get engaged so easily—would she ever have another chance?
