“I have something important to take care of today. I won’t be able to spend time with you,” Leonard said, not bothering to soften the truth. His grandmother and the others weren’t staying for long anyway—both mothers needed to head back soon to prepare for the wedding.
He’d already promised he’d go out with them today, but now, thanks to a last-minute issue involving that woman, he’d left them behind. He knew the sudden change of plans had left everyone in a bad mood.
The only way they’d truly relax and enjoy themselves was if he came back and joined them. Then, maybe, they could finally let go and have some fun.
After finishing his business, Leonard headed straight home. As luck would have it, the family had just left for their outing, so he managed to catch up with them.
Marguerite had taken everyone to visit a few nearby sights. His grandmother used to come here often, but as she’d gotten older, her trips outside had become rare. She hadn’t visited in ages.
“It really feels different to get out like this,” she said, gazing across the water. “I love it here. This lake is beautiful.”
The view was breathtaking. In her youth, Leonard’s grandmother had been fiercely ambitious, pouring all her time into her career and rarely taking a moment to enjoy life. Now, age kept her indoors even more. But with family around, she could finally savor these moments—the kind of peaceful life she’d always wanted.
“Grandma, if you’d like, you can stay here a little longer,” Leonard offered. “A few of my projects are wrapping up soon, and nothing new has started yet. I’ve got plenty of free time, so I can take you out as much as you’d like.”
They were deep in conversation when Leonard came walking up, catching sight of them all together, enjoying the scenery. The warmth in his chest told him he’d made the right decision.
After all, this was the Murphy family. The engagement ceremony had drawn a sizeable crowd, including plenty of reporters and photographers.
For weeks, the public had speculated about Leonard’s love life, since he’d never made any official announcement. Everyone was desperate to know the identity of his fiancée.
The moment Marguerite appeared, the whole crowd began whispering.
“I thought he was rumored to be involved with Winifred? Weren’t there even stories about them in the news? So why isn’t she the bride-to-be?”
