The elderly Mrs. Murphy looked every bit the woman with the weight of the world on her shoulders. Leonard understood all too well what was troubling her. He hadn’t been to the office since yesterday, so he was in the dark about how things had developed. There was nothing he could do but wait until he got there to find out.
Just then, the doctor came in for morning rounds and checked on Mrs. Murphy’s current condition.
“She’s stable for now,” the doctor said, glancing at Leonard and Marguerite. “But it’s important that she stays in the hospital for close observation. As long as things remain steady, she should recover smoothly.”
He added, “Given her age and the fact that she’s already had heart surgery—and her recovery wasn’t exactly ideal—you have to be extra careful. She can’t take any more emotional shocks.”
Hearing this, both Leonard and Marguerite breathed a little easier. Still, the thought of Mrs. Murphy having to stay in the hospital for so long tugged at their hearts.
“Thank you, doctor,” Marguerite said softly.
Seeing that there was nothing else, the doctor nodded and left the room.
“Grandma, the doctor just said you’re out of danger. You need to rest and not worry yourself sick over things that can wait.”
Mrs. Murphy managed a tired smile. “I know, dear. Leonard, there’s a mountain of work waiting for you at the office. I’m fine now, and Marguerite is staying with me—what more could you ask for? Go on, take care of what needs to be done at the company. They need you there more than I do right now.”
But even as she said it, Mrs. Murphy’s face was clouded with worry. She knew full well what was happening at the office. After what happened with Benjamin, the family’s reputation had taken a serious hit. Both families had lost face, and they’d become the talk of the town—laughingstocks, really. The Murphys’ standing in the community had suffered, especially since so many influential people had attended the engagement and had witnessed the whole fiasco.
Leonard left Marguerite at the hospital and headed for the company.
Marguerite walked him out, eager for a breath of fresh air and to see him off.
“If Edith’s family comes by and gives you any trouble, call me right away. I’ll come straight from the office,” Leonard told her. “And whatever you do, don’t let them argue in front of Grandma. Her health is fragile enough as it is—I don’t want her upset by any more drama.”
That was what worried him most. It was why he’d barely left Mrs. Murphy’s side since yesterday, his nerves stretched thin, keeping watch over his grandmother.
