But there was no other choice—he couldn’t just ignore the urgent matters at the office. For now, he’d have to go in and see what was happening. As soon as things were under control, he promised he’d come straight back to the hospital.
“I know, don’t worry. If anything comes up, I’ll call you right away. And she’ll probably stop by soon, too. With her here, I’m not afraid of anything,” Marguerite reassured him.
Mrs. Murphy always had a way of making him feel safe, like she was a constant shield at his side.
Leonard nodded. He’d already messaged his mother, asking her to come over and stay with his grandmother as soon as she finished her errands.
The main reason, of course, was to keep Edith in check. With his mother in the room, Edith would think twice before causing a scene.
“I’ll be back soon. Just wait for me, all right?” Leonard felt a pang of guilt as he looked at Marguerite.
Ever since she’d been with him, she’d endured so much. It seemed like everyone around them disapproved of their relationship. Apart from their mothers, no one really supported them.
It was exhausting, honestly, and sometimes he didn’t even know how to describe that feeling.
After Leonard left, Marguerite returned to the hospital room and found her grandmother fast asleep. Maybe it was her age, or maybe the stress had finally caught up with her, but at least she was resting now. That was a good sign.
Marguerite tiptoed inside and settled quietly by her grandmother’s bedside.
“Alright then. But if anything happens at the hospital, promise me you’ll call right away. I’ll be here as soon as I can,” Marguerite finally agreed, though she still looked worried. Seeing Mrs. Murphy’s insistence, she had no choice but to relent.
After leaving the hospital, Marguerite headed home. She felt lost—unsure what to do with herself, not wanting to work, but unable to think of anything else to occupy her mind.
When Marguerite arrived, Wilma was the first to greet her, hurrying over with concern written all over her face.
“Marguerite, how is Mrs. Murphy doing now?”
“Her heart can’t take any more stress, but for now, she’s stable—there’s nothing to worry about,” Marguerite replied quietly.
