“I’ll go with you. It’s so late already—I don’t feel comfortable letting you go alone,” Leonard insisted, unable to bear the thought of the woman he loved heading out by herself, especially at this hour.
“That’s really not necessary. I can take care of myself, and I’ll probably need to give Laura a ride home anyway. You know, as a man, it might be a bit awkward for you. Besides, you’ve still got so much work piled up; you should just stay in and handle your business affairs tonight.”
Marguerite spoke gently but firmly, her words always thoughtful and precise, considering every angle before making a decision.
Since Marguerite had already made up her mind, Leonard couldn’t really argue. He had to admit she made sense.
“At least let the driver take you. And if anything happens, anything at all, promise me you’ll call right away. Don’t try to handle things on your own.”
“I know, I know. Quit worrying—and besides, Luke will be there. Nothing’s going to happen.”
After a few more words of reassurance, Marguerite grabbed her purse and headed out the door.
When she arrived at the spot Luke had texted her, she found Laura slumped over a table, looking a mess. Luke stood nearby, keeping her company, but clearly at a loss for what to do.
“Luke, how could you just leave her here like this and do nothing?” Marguerite hurried over, exasperated by his helplessness. At the very least, Laura needed to be moved somewhere quiet and comfortable to rest.
“Marguerite? What are you doing here? I thought you had a million things to deal with at home… You don’t need to worry about me, really—I’m fine. I actually had a great time tonight,” Laura slurred, trying to wave off the concern.
“I’m sorry, Marguerite, I really am. I shouldn’t have dragged you into this. This is all my fault…”
Seeing Marguerite, Laura’s embarrassment bubbled up, and she started apologizing profusely.
“Don’t be silly—it’s me, you don’t have to stand on ceremony. But I do need to say this while you’re still awake: promise me you’ll never drink this much again, okay? I know you must feel awful right now.”
