Goodbye My Arrogant Ex (Marguerite and Leonard) novel Chapter 221

Marguerite pressed her lips together, a frown creasing her brow as she watched Laura squirm uncomfortably. Her heart ached for her.

If Laura hadn’t developed feelings for the man in question, if she hadn’t been so inexplicably stirred up, she never would have drunk so much tonight.

Laura was usually levelheaded, a lively but sensible girl with a sunny disposition. For her to let herself go like this, drinking past her limit, something must have been weighing on her mind.

Marguerite helped Laura onto the bed and fetched a damp towel, gently wiping her face. She’d always thought of this young woman as a little sister, and seeing her so distraught over love pulled at her heartstrings.

What made it worse was that the man at the center of all this was Marguerite’s own friend. Yet when it came to matters of the heart, she felt utterly helpless—there was nothing she could do for either of them.

“Mr. Taylor, please, you really don’t need to worry about me,” Laura slurred, trying to sit up but failing. “I’m fine, honestly. You should get some rest—it’s so late already, and I’ve dragged you all the way over here for nothing.”

Even now, drunk as she was, Laura hated to trouble anyone.

Marguerite sighed, at a loss.

Luke stood off to the side, quietly watching the inebriated woman sprawled on the bed. Her cheeks were flushed, lips moving as she mumbled incoherently. Strangely enough, there was something endearing about her in this state.

He realized he hadn’t felt this drawn to another woman in a long time. And for reasons he couldn’t quite explain, he found his gaze lingering on her again and again.

She paused, looking Laura in the eye. “Look at the state you’re in. If even one of those men had had the wrong intentions tonight, do you know what could’ve happened?”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Taylor. I know I messed up,” Laura murmured, head bowed. “I just got carried away tonight—I was so emotional. And you weren’t there, and Mr. Zade was so gentle with me…I just couldn’t help myself.”

She’d never dared hope for anything like this before. Deep down, she knew Zade’s kindness was only because Marguerite had asked him to look out for her, but still, she couldn’t help feeling happy.

Marguerite softened her tone. “I know you were excited, and I’m glad for you. But you need to watch out for yourself. No matter how deeply you care for someone, you can’t lose sight of who you are. Even if you two do end up together, you still have to protect yourself.”
