“And that’s when you’ll realize the most important thing is to protect yourself and find your own happiness. No one else should have the power to affect you.”
Marguerite couldn’t help but worry as she watched Laura, looking so vulnerable. If those two really did end up together, she knew Laura would give everything she had. And if Luke ever let her down, Marguerite would blame herself for letting it happen.
But what could she do? Laura was already in too deep, and there was no way to pull her out now. No matter what anyone said, it would fall on deaf ears.
“I understand, Mr. Taylor. I’m really sorry you had to go to all this trouble for me today, and that you stayed so late to take care of me. I’m fine now, really. You should head home—there’s a lot going on with your family these days.”
“Promise me, Laura. From now on, you have to look out for yourself. Don’t let anyone hurt you, no matter what.”
“Please, just stay here tonight. I’ve already arranged a room for you. Get some rest, and don’t worry about going into the office early tomorrow.”
Marguerite always knew how to make people feel cared for, and her concern was genuine.
“Thank you, Mr. Taylor. You’re so kind.” Laura was deeply grateful, realizing she’d made the right choice in whom to follow.
She remembered when Marguerite left the company and Laura was the only one who went with her. Back then, Marguerite had been honest from the start—they might not earn much at first, maybe nothing, but things would get better. Laura had been so certain: it didn’t matter if there was no money, she just wanted to be with Marguerite. Looking back now, she knew she’d made the right decision.
Now that Laura looked more herself and seemed out of danger, Marguerite gathered her things and left the hotel.
But just as she stepped outside, she found Luke waiting for her.
Mr. Taylor had been right all along—she needed to put herself first before loving anyone else wholeheartedly. But she just couldn’t do it.
Especially for someone who never even saw her, not really. So what was the point?
Marguerite left the hotel and headed home. When she arrived, she found Leonard still up, working in the study.
“Did everything get sorted out?” he asked.
“Yes. Laura’s fine now—she’s sobered up. I booked a room for her so she can get some proper rest.”
