Marguerite replied softly, her voice gentle.
“It’s so late already—why aren’t you resting yet? I know things have been hectic at the office lately, but you can’t let your health fall apart.” She looked at the man before her, worry creasing her brow.
This was always how he worked, throwing himself in completely, but she knew he couldn’t keep up this pace forever. He always promised to strike a balance between work and rest, yet somehow, whenever he was with her, he never seemed to keep that promise.
“The company’s on my back about this project. After everything that happened before, they don’t really trust us. I don’t have much choice—I have to get this finished tonight.”
“Go on, get some sleep. Don’t worry about me,” Leonard said, glancing up with a tired smile. He knew she was concerned, but he didn’t want her staying up late just for his sake.
After leaving the study, Marguerite headed straight for the kitchen. Running errands outside had left her a little worn out, and to her surprise, her stomach was starting to rumble.
Since Leonard was still awake, she decided to make a little something for both of them—a late-night snack to share. Just the thought of it warmed her heart.
Before long, Marguerite carried two steaming bowls of pasta into the study and went to find Leonard.
“You’ve been working nonstop since this afternoon. You must be exhausted. Come take a break—and have some pasta with me!” She realized that even this simple act brought her a deep sense of happiness.
Leonard looked up, momentarily stunned by the sight of her with the food. He hadn’t expected her to bring him a midnight snack.
“You made this yourself?” He gazed at her in disbelief.
“How could I let you do that every day? Just take care of what you need to—it’s enough for me,” Leonard replied. He didn’t want the woman he loved burdened by daily chores.
As long as she was happy and able to handle her own work, that was all he needed.
“Alright, let’s eat before it gets cold.”
A gentle warmth bloomed in Marguerite’s chest. Maybe this was the difference between loving and not loving. When she’d been with Benjamin, if he liked something she made, he’d always say he wanted to have it every day. But Leonard’s answer was something she’d never expected, never even imagined.
They shared a simple meal together, but both felt a quiet sense of contentment—and true happiness.
