“It’s already so late, and you’ve stayed with me for hours. Go on, get some rest.”
Tonight, Leonard had to finish that contract—there was a meeting first thing in the morning, and everything hinged on it. He really couldn’t sit with her any longer, even if he wanted to.
If it weren’t for the deadline, if Marguerite had stayed up this late just to keep him company, he’d have dropped everything and sat by her side.
But Marguerite could see he was truly swamped tonight; if he was working so late, it meant this project really mattered to him. She didn’t press any further, hoping he could wrap things up soon and finally get a little sleep.
Before she knew it, the night had passed.
When Marguerite got up the next morning, Leonard was already gone. Things had been running smoothly at her studio lately, so there wasn’t much for her to do. She decided to spend the day at the hospital with her grandmother.
Mrs. Murphy had been looking after the elderly Mrs. Murphy for two or three days straight now. Marguerite figured it was her turn to give her a break.
Leonard had been buried in work lately, barely able to get away. If Marguerite didn’t step in, her grandmother would only worry more.
When she arrived, Mrs. Murphy was spoon-feeding her grandmother.
“I’m here,” Marguerite announced, stepping inside with a bag of fruit.
She’d always been fiercely independent; being stuck in a hospital bed, needing so much attention, was hard enough. Knowing her family was rearranging their lives for her made her feel even more uncomfortable.
“Grandma, how could we possibly leave you here alone?” Marguerite protested gently. “Even if your health has stabilized, I just wouldn’t feel right about it.”
“The doctor said I only need to stay for observation three more days. If nothing comes up, I’ll be discharged. Mrs. Murphy can stay; you two should focus on your work,” Mrs. Murphy said, her voice patient and kind. “Really, there’s no need to worry about me.”
“Leonard hasn’t been able to visit these past few days—work must be overwhelming for him…”
