Luke spent every day feeling out of place, caught in a web of indecision.
“Oh, come on,” Marguerite said, exasperated. “I don’t think you have anyone else on your mind. You just don’t want to be with my friend Laura. Honestly, you don’t have to feel any pressure. Whatever happens between you two is up to you—I'm not going to interfere.”
“The only reason I tried to give you two a chance is because I thought you might work out together. I just wanted you to try. Really, there’s no need to overthink this.”
Marguerite hadn’t planned to meddle, but sometimes she just couldn’t help herself.
“Alright, enough of this,” Luke replied, brushing off her concern. “I’ll handle my own business, but you should probably talk to Laura soon and make things clear. I don’t want to lead her on or waste her time.”
The truth was, Luke had no intention of pursuing Laura. The thought hadn’t even crossed his mind.
“If that’s how you feel, then there’s nothing else to say,” Marguerite sighed. “Let’s just let things happen naturally.” Still, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Luke and Laura might actually be a good match.
Luke frowned, uneasy. Even if things were left to fate, he had no desire to get entangled with Laura. It would only waste both of their time.
“Luke, I am curious, though,” Marguerite said, unable to hold back. “What kind of person could ever end up with you?”
“That’s none of your business,” Luke shot back, sounding unbothered. He’d never admit it to her face, but the truth was, the person in his heart was Marguerite herself.
“We had some work stuff to talk over,” Hogan explained, forcing a smile, though his expression was unusually grim, as if something serious had happened. “I didn’t get a chance to tell you before you got back.”
“Did something come up at work that you can’t handle? Is that why you called my brother over?” Marguerite asked, her concern growing. “Is there anything I can help with?”
Ever since she walked in, Marguerite had felt the tension in the air. Hogan was the kind of person who only ever shared good news, never his troubles, and he rarely asked for help.
“It’s nothing, really—you don’t need to worry,” he said. “We just have a few projects we’re collaborating on, so I asked your brother to come by.”
