He spoke slowly, choosing his words with care. He also knew Leonard had been swamped lately, and if he brought his younger sister home, it might actually put Leonard’s mind at ease. Most importantly, their parents had really missed having their daughter around. Ever since they reconciled, they’d cherished every moment together.
“Alright,” Leonard agreed without hesitation.
Hogan had brought over a bottle of whiskey that evening, determined to share a drink with him. Leonard had been through a lot lately, carrying the weight of enormous pressure day after day.
No matter how strong or capable someone is, no one can shoulder everything alone forever. Sooner or later, exhaustion sets in, and even Leonard had his breaking point. To make things worse, there were plenty of people waiting in the wings, hoping to see him stumble. He would never let that happen.
“Leonard, honestly, this is nothing for you. You shouldn’t let it get to you. Problems have a way of working themselves out in time,” Hogan said, trying to sound casual but unable to hide his concern. He hadn’t planned to say much, but tonight felt like the right moment to offer a few words of encouragement. He knew Leonard had been carrying this burden alone, never letting it spill over onto anyone else.
“Don’t worry. I’ll handle the company. I won’t give them any opening. Besides, Mrs. Murphy trusts me. I owe it to her to live up to that trust,” Leonard replied. He never dumped his stress on others—he preferred to shoulder it himself.
“I believe in you,” Hogan said simply.
But giving up the company to someone else would mean defeat, and Leonard had never been one to accept defeat at work, much less bow to anyone.
“It’s not surprising,” Hogan said. “Everyone’s just looking out for their own interests. But you need to be careful. If they gang up on you and force you out, you’ll end up at a huge disadvantage. And watch your back—don’t let them pull any tricks behind the scenes. Just be extra careful right now.”
Hogan had been around this industry for years. He knew these people far too well, and couldn’t help but warn Leonard, hoping he’d stay one step ahead.
