“Let’s go home and check on her first.”
They hurried back as fast as they could. When they arrived, the elderly Mrs. Murphy was lying in bed, struggling for breath.
Leonard rushed to her side, his anxiety barely concealed. “Why didn’t you call me sooner when Grandma got like this? Why did you have the housekeeper tell me instead? We should get her to the hospital right now.”
His words were tinged with reproach, but worry overwhelmed everything else. Seeing his grandmother so frail, Leonard felt a deep ache in his chest.
Sometimes, he honestly wondered if he should just give up the company—none of it seemed important compared to her. If everyone else cared so much about the business, fine, let them have it. All he wanted was for his grandmother to be safe and well.
Mrs. Murphy waved a hand weakly. “Don’t fuss over me, really. I’ve already taken my medicine. I know how things are at the company, and I don’t want you distracted from work. Go back and take care of business; you don’t need to worry about me.”
Even as sick as she was, Mrs. Murphy’s main concern was the company’s future. She didn’t want anything to go wrong, and she certainly didn’t want to be a burden.
“Grandma, I’ll handle the company,” Leonard said firmly, “but you have to come to the hospital today. We need to find out what’s really going on with your health.”
Marguerite chimed in, her voice gentle but insistent. “She’s right, Grandma. If you don’t go, we’ll all be worried sick. Please come with us—if the doctor says there’s nothing serious, then we’ll all feel much better.”
Mrs. Murphy finally relented, shaking her head in defeat. “Alright, alright, you two win. If it’ll put your minds at ease, I’ll go to the hospital with you.”
With no other choice, she let them help her up and out the door.
They quickly made it to the hospital, where Leonard pulled a few strings and got the hospital director to arrange a full medical check-up for his grandmother.
“Grandma isn’t herself today,” he confided quietly to Marguerite. “I’m really worried it’s something serious. We need to make sure she gets a thorough exam so we can stop worrying.”
