Goodbye My Arrogant Ex (Marguerite and Leonard) novel Chapter 28

“I understand. I’ll be right there.”

Marguerite answered swiftly, her voice steady despite the emotional turmoil that lingered from the earlier argument. She took a moment to straighten her clothes and regain her composure, smoothing away any traces of distress.

Turning on her heel, she strode purposefully toward the door, each step radiating her resolve and professionalism.

Laura followed close behind, her eyes full of concern and worry. She watched Marguerite’s face intently, searching for any flicker of emotion, any sign that the confrontation had rattled her.

But Marguerite’s expression was strikingly calm, as if the argument moments ago had never happened at all.

Because her office door had been open the entire time, their heated voices had echoed into the hallway. There, a handful of employees whispered among themselves, not out of malice, but out of genuine concern for Marguerite.

As one of the company’s founders, she had always been known for her generosity. Year after year, she made sure everyone received a fair share of bonuses and end-of-year rewards. She never hesitated to recognize hard work, and in return, everyone respected and cared for her deeply.

Inside the conference room, the board members seized the brief moments before Marguerite’s arrival to whisper among themselves.

“We all know this company wouldn’t be here without Ms. Taylor’s dedication,” one director said, shaking his head with a heavy sigh. “Now she’s leaving us—it’s hard to accept.”

Another board member echoed his worry, “Benjamin just doesn’t see the reality of things. Sooner or later, he’ll run this company into the ground.”

“So what do we do?” a third director asked, lowering his voice. “It’s obvious Ms. Taylor is determined to leave. If we don’t act, her shares might end up in someone else’s hands.”

“Exactly. Better we join forces and buy her out ourselves. That way, we can keep Benjamin in check. At least our voices will carry more weight than his alone,” suggested an older director.

Her words were calm and steady, as if she had already let go of the past and was ready to face whatever lay ahead.

The board fell silent.

Marguerite continued, “There’s really no need to worry. Benjamin may have his personal flaws, but when it comes to the business, he’s proven himself capable.”

She wasn’t making excuses for him. Over the years, Benjamin’s skill at networking had opened doors she herself couldn’t have managed. He had a sharp eye for opportunity, and many of his investments had paid off handsomely—as long as he didn’t sabotage himself.

Of course, when it came to choosing a life partner, his judgment left much to be desired.
