“Go ahead and do what you believe is right. Even if, one day, the company really does go under or ends up in someone else's hands, I won’t blame you. We did our best, and if things still don’t work out in the end, there’s no shame in that.”
Though Mrs. Murphy was getting on in years, she saw things with remarkable clarity. She had learned to let go and accept whatever life brought her way.
“Grandma, I’m willing to do anything for the company. And I know I have no choice but to succeed—I won’t let your life’s work fall into someone else’s hands.”
Hearing his words, Mrs. Murphy felt completely at ease, certain she’d made the right decision.
“All right, then—it’s settled. Let’s not bring it up again. And don’t ever talk about leaving the company, understood?”
“You two care about me so much; it truly brightens my heart. I feel better already just seeing how much I mean to you.”
Mrs. Murphy beamed at the pair, her eyes twinkling with happiness. Seeing them together, seeing her grandson find a woman he truly loved, filled her with warmth and pride.
Marguerite’s presence in their home was the cherry on top; finding such a wonderful girl was no small feat, and Mrs. Murphy cherished her all the more for it.
Just as the three of them were enjoying their cozy moment, Aaron and Edith strode right in.
She’d noticed how these two had gotten better and better at winning Mrs. Murphy’s favor. The moment they heard she was unwell, they’d rushed her to the hospital.
“And besides, with Grandma’s health so delicate now, how could you drag her all the way to the hospital? Don’t you realize how much strain she’s under? What exactly are you trying to do?” Edith’s voice was heavy with accusation and anger, making her disapproval crystal clear.
“This isn’t your place to speak. Save your fake concern—I don’t need it,” Mrs. Murphy snapped, her patience wearing thin. She didn’t want to argue with them, knowing it would only damage her health, but seeing them behave like this made it hard to keep her temper in check.
“Mother, I’m only thinking of what’s best for you. We’ve already hired a private physician for you—someone far more qualified than these people. Why insist on staying in the hospital, where you can’t even rest properly?” Aaron protested.
