“Thank you, Marguerite!”
The two of them ended up talking for quite a while before finally hanging up.
As soon as Marguerite ended the call, she dialed Hogan’s number.
“Hogan, I just spoke with Hannah. She’s feeling really sensitive right now and, honestly, seems pretty upset. She told me you’ve been distant these past few days, almost like you’re ignoring her. I think she just wanted to vent—she’s clearly frustrated with you. Really, I think you two should just talk things out.”
“You’re a couple, and still in that honeymoon phase. If you keep pushing her away like this, it’s not fair to her.”
“Honestly, there’s no need to torture yourself. Instead of bottling everything up, why not just be honest with her? Tell her you know what’s been going on.”
Marguerite sighed, exhausted by the tension between them. She couldn’t fathom what either of them was really thinking.
Hogan felt the same way.
“I’m sorry for dragging you into this,” he said quietly. “I know work’s been rough for you, and you’ve got a lot happening at home, too. I shouldn’t be bothering you with my relationship drama. I never wanted you to have to carry that burden.”
“I agree, though. We need to clear the air. There shouldn’t be secrets between us. Honesty is important.”
“Hannah,” Hogan began, his tone straightforward, “there’s a reason I haven’t reached out these past few days. There are some things we need to talk about.”
He didn’t try to comfort her the way he usually did when she was upset. Instead, he got right to the point.
“What are you talking about?” Hannah frowned, confused by his sudden candor.
“The truth is, I’ve been distant because I’ve been questioning whether we should keep going. I found out some things about your past—things I’m sure you didn’t want to happen, things out of your control. I’ve been struggling with how to face you, and that’s why I pulled away. I hope you can understand.”
Hannah was stunned, completely blindsided. She never imagined he’d find out the truth about her past—let alone that he’d investigate her at all.
