“Hogan, you investigated me…”
Hannah’s whole body trembled as she stared at him in disbelief, her voice shaking with emotion.
The despair in her eyes was heartbreaking. Hogan’s chest tightened for this woman; he knew the past didn’t really have anything to do with him. It wasn’t as if he’d wished for any of it to happen.
“Hannah, I never wanted to know about any of that. I wasn’t trying to investigate you. I just learned about it by accident. And honestly, none of it matters to me. What matters is that something so painful happened to you, and you kept it from me.”
He took a breath and continued, “I care about you—a lot. You’re one of the few women I’ve truly fallen for. I’ve been thinking these past few days, and I realized we should stand by each other, no matter what.”
His words were steady, filled with conviction. To him, whatever had happened before wasn’t important and certainly wasn’t enough to tear them apart.
A shaky smile broke on Hannah’s lips, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Hogan, what’s the point of saying all this now? You already know everything about my past—the side of me I never wanted anyone to see. Look at me now. Do you honestly think we can still go on?”
She shrank back, lost and unsure how to deal with any of it.
“Why couldn’t we go on?” Hogan replied, his voice gentle but firm. “I love you, Hannah. Even after finding out, my feelings haven’t changed. None of it is a reason to walk away. If anything, what we have has only been tested and proven real.”
Her shoulders shook as she cried. “Honestly, I don’t think I deserve to be loved. I don’t deserve to be with the man I love. Choosing to be with you was clearly a mistake. I should’ve accepted that I was meant to end up alone.”
“Hannah, that’s not what I meant at all,” Hogan pleaded. “I just wanted to be honest with you. That’s all. I didn’t want to keep secrets between us.”
He hadn’t expected her to react like this, hadn’t imagined his honesty would push her further away. He’d only said what he did because he’d made up his mind—he wanted them to be together, and nothing that had happened before would change that.
“So now you know everything. I hid the truth from you, and that was wrong. Let’s just break up, Hogan. Let’s never see each other again.”
